RA: Mmmm...Because he trusts my taste in music, my skills, my style..Me!


3121: What REALLY moves a crowd?

RA: A bangin' beat, slick lyrics (that stick in ya head), FUNK U know; JB, Parliament, Prince, Rick James, Michael Jackson & all their derivatives.

3121: The main difference between a Prince audience and a normal club crowd is...?

RA: A lot of them know ALL his tunes so I can dig a little deeper than just the hits. Play a B-side & they'll go nuts.


3121: Get alot of speculation of ur talent because U r so good looking?

RA: LOL, probably more so 'cause I'm a woman. I've heard this one many times, "Wow, you're so good 4 a girl." Huh??? Don't get me started on all the whack male DJs, whatever.


3121:Do U think ur good looking?

RA: Well, I'd like 2 think I'm not terribly ugly. LOL. But U know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Again, whatever.


3121: What's ur sense of style? Do U spend alot of time getting ready 4 a per4mance?

RA: Nah. I wear what I feel like at the moment. Style-wise, I've been told on more than one occasion that I dress like a "pirate", "gypsy", "pin-up" and a "superhero". So there U have it.


3121: We saw U on the BET awards. What was it like being around all those music legends or r they just like us regular-folk?

RA: It's always a blessing 2 be surrounded by such amazing creative energy. It's not only a pleasure 2 watch them perform. But there's so much 2 learn from them as well.


3121: We know U come from a very musical backbround. Please tell r readers the story of ur mother's pregnancy with U (if it's not 2 personal).

RA: I just had 2 call her 2 get the accurate scoop. Well, my mother was a music major in college & she plays winds (flute, saxophone, etc.). It was her senior year in high school & she was pregnant with me. At the time she was doin' a mini-tour with a jazz band. So she was playing most every night. She was playing alto sax. She said the sax laid right across her belly and she used 2 think about me while she played. The vibrations I was feelin', what I was hearin', etc. That was the seventh month. After that she was playing & practicing her flute as usual 4 her senior recital. Funny enough I came right before she could perform the recital she had practiced so much 4. She got 2 raising me & my sis. She didn't get her degree till 14 years later!


3121: Do U possess any other musical gifts beyond the art of the turntable? Any plans 4 showcasing those gifts in the future?

RA: Well, I've been working on music with some friends of mine. U know-vibin, singin, a lil rappin, beats. So yes, hopefully sooner than later I'll be ready 2 "showcase" a lil somethin, somethin.


3121: Any tips 4 the young, female DJs coming up in ur footsteps?

RA: Practice, practice, practice! Know ur music (whatever genre it is that U spin) backwards and 4wards. U'll develop ur own style. Know ur crowd, (or at least do ur best 2 adapt if they r not what U were expecting). If somethin' goes awry, just keep it movin. If U don't show it, 9 times outta 10 no one noticed. Go out & listen 2 ur favorite DJs. See what U like & dislike, what does the audience respond 2? It's live so expect the unexpected. And most importantly, spinning is energy exchange. Sometimes in order 2 get it back from a stiff audience U gotta give alot extra. Once the exchange is happening tho its a beautiful thing. Everyone's a winner


3121: Rashida, please share one of ur nightdreams with us?

RA: My dreams feel like waking life, very vivid and real. I usually remember at least 3-5 of my dreams a night. I try 2 pay attention 2 them 'cause alot of times I'll dream of a situation and then find myself in it. Like last night I dreamt I was on a tour. At 1st we were on a train, in China. When the train meets the shore we board a small boat. We launch off a small rocky cliff and straight into the water. It's shallow at first, u can see everything in it. There's a beached whale, some sea plants, etc. As we get deeper the water starts to rise to our chests. I'm wondering if this thing is gonna float or sink? But I am reminded by someone in the boat that our guide has warned us this was a "special" boat and thats just how it flowed. Of course the whole time I'm thinking about what's livin' in the water and what's soon 2 b in the boat with us. The water's beautiful tho & warm. Weird. Anyhow the journey continues but gets even more abstract, so I'll leave it at that.

can someone please explain to me why they think she's good as a DJ? I've seen her three times and I don't get it.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing as I was typing it. I never got a good vibe from her. She doesn't "engage" the audience like she speaks of. I found her rather boring....some might not, but I did.

Just a thought with what is going on in the Prince Community today (re: Princefams) by writing the above 3121 Online Magazine interview it could put this website at risk.
