"Upper Room Review: LOLLY POP'S Self-Titled Debut

Rating: 5 out 5 Stars

Each day we receive tons of CDs from artists asking for airplay on our radio shows. And yes, we listen to each CD to get a fair read on an artist. However, there are few that actually manage to get a complete listen during my hour and 15 minute drive to the WVOF studios. Lolly Pop's new self-titled debut CD received two complete listens on my drive back and forth to the studios. It was that enjoyable and impressive !!!

Lolly Pop, former lead vocalist for the Twin Cities band Telephone, has an infectious personality and vocal style that puts a stamp on this release. Her songwriting shines on this CD as well. Lolly Pop is backed by her talented band the Couture Club, and the production of Monte Moir (The Time, Janet Jackson) , Dr. Fink (Prince and the Revolution), and Ricardo Autobahn (UK techno producer guru).

Lolly Pop harkens back to when we all got pumped up to go to a club on Friday or Saturday night. Money in our pocket, clothes freshly pressed, a date to pick up...Enter the club, and the lights and booming sound system hit our senses. Lolly Pop references Minneapolis funk, Euro-Pop, Sheila E., the Electric Slide, and I also hear a bit of Run-DMC on this record.

My faves are "Elevator Operator" (love the thumping bass and vocals) which is a song that has a fantastic video on www.myspace.com/lollypop and the Moir/Pop/Autobahn dance cut "Everybody Loves Dancing" is a definite winner and cries for multi-remixes and must be played loud on your sound system.

Then, Dr. Fink lends assistance with an amazing rendition of Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur". Lolly Pop's vocals are on centerstage and it is a defining song.

Overall, this CD is a must for music lovers and will do extremely well in clubs and even in your home (tip: turn that sucka up. it is meant to be enjoyed that way).

Can't wait to see Lolly Pop on tour with Monte Moir in support of this great CD!!

I received the CD and it is OFF THE CHAIN!

RE: dance tracks, my favorites are Elevator Operator and Everybody Loves Dancing.

However, her down tempo tracks The Chauffeur and Happy Endings are SENSATIONAL! Her vocals on these two tracks remind me of Siouxsie and the Banshees!

Needless to say, this CD is HIGHLY recommended!

I listened to their tracks on myspace. Definitely got the club vibe. Cool stuff. Might have to add it to the collection.

Yeah, most of it is uptempo, but the down tempo tracks are cool too.

Does anyone remember Olive's "Your Not Alone"? The last track on the CD reminds me of that track. Very haunting. My friend got chills listening to it.

A must have.
