Najee or Maceo Parker...? Well, which one...? I like Maceo and all, I just think that Najee, is more fun to hear. When Prince tells Najee to "tear it up!" That's exactly what he does. Given Maceo in the same situation, often times I listen (or watch him, if in concert) and he just doesn't 'get there' I find myself coaching him, or pushing him forward. "Come on, come on, let it out." It seems as if he struggles to say what he wants to say (during his solo) and he never gets there.
What ya'll think...? Or am I thinking too much again...? Blue Drink Blue Kool-aid [This message was edited Fri Aug 30 16:58:27 PDT 2002 by TheBluePrince] Blue

With all die respect to Maceo, I agree. Najee is more of a sax-player suitable for Prince. Mace is pre-occupied woth his own funk, in the past 12 years he has established himself as a leader. On Prince's stage there is no room for two leaders. Prince gives Mace the room to fully develop his craft, but Mace is simply not doing it. He is playing the same runs again and again, funk is a repetitious groove. He needs to have the emphasizm on the one, like he had with JB, like he does in his won group. Najee is technically better, if he is more soulful or not -- well, thats a very subjective judgement. I personally think that it was Eric Leeds who fits the best. MACEO! MACEO!!! MACEO!!! this is like comparing Bacardi 151 with Kool-Aid! Okay maybe I missed something. Maceo is cool and all but Najee has been blowing up the jazz scene for years too. The brother is bad. I do realize that this may have been the first time that a lot of Prince fans were introduced to the man but linking him to Kool Aid is going a wee bit too far. And what if I don't like Rum??? LOL! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MACEO! MACEO!!! MACEO!!! this is like comparing Bacardi 151 with Kool-Aid! I Like Kool-aid I don't drink, not even socially. I wasn't questioning; ability, experience or Funkyness. Just in general, who would you rather hear after Prince says "tear it up" I have alot of 'live' music with both Maceo and Najee, I've been to concerts and seen them both. Maceo just doesn't do it for me. Take 'The Work' for example...Live on Jay Leno. Najee made you wanna get up dance, and 'Dorothy Parker' he doubled on Flute and Alto Sax I believe...it KICKED! Maceo makes me bob my head real hard, but Najee forces you out of your seat! I'm a Sax player, Improvisation, is story telling...I never really got Maceo's story. Najee's stories read like a good book. Blue Drink Blue Kool-Aid Blue

Both r good. but if i had a choice, i'd pick maceo as best. he seems to "feel" the music better and his horn sound so smooth and mellow. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

Johnny
I just need 2 add... Maceo is what God would sound like if He was a sax player... ___ AMEN to that Johnny, to me Maceo is like Aretha on sax, he never forces anything...it's not about technique, he never goes for the effect, he leads you there by the hand... ___ Blueprince: I'm a Sax player, Improvisation, is story telling...I never really got Maceo's story. Najee's stories read like a good book. ___ WHAAT a sax player and you can't hear what Maceo is doing???... shame on you!!! and shame on you Soulpower, sorry but to every sax player I ever heard speak about Maceo there is only one... yeah he ain't doing the Kenny G thing like Najee, that smooth coma inducing so called jazz, Maceo tears it up, sure he might hang back a bit on Prince shows, maybe that's a sign of respect one band leader to another...but man listening to Avalanche at the Lincoln Center I don't think there was much holding back there!!!
