"The Time" question

I was checking out the credits on "It's About Time" by Morris Day and it says that Morris wrote "The Bird", "Jungle Love", "Gigolos get Lonely","Cool","Ice Cream Castles","Get It Up", 777-9311, and "Girl" was co-written by Morris & Jamie Starr(Prince). I had always believed that Prince wrote all those other hits and that Jesse Johnson at least co-wrote "Jungle Love". Anyone got clarification?

AND if I'm not mistaken, Jesse co-wrote "The Bird". Either Prince or the combo of Prince/Morris Day co-wrote everything else!!!!!

I think it's to make amends for something P feels guilty about.Hell,Morris is lookin' pretty sold-out these days in a very wack Atlanta car commercial. It's embarrassing.I wonder how much he got paid to clown in an uncool way.I would think he would be getting paid more than enough from all the touring. That is exactly why I don't understand why there hasn't been a new The Time album with very respectable jams on it.That seems to be the way he could earn and maintain some integrity.

I think Jesse co-wrote "Jungle Love", but the rest might be Prince only.

I'm always skeptical of someone claiming to be this great composer when they haven't written anything in the last several years! Did they lose their muse or something? Say what you want about Prince, but he's still putting songs out there. They might not be his best work, but he's producing. If Morris wrote all these songs, why not any more? I think we know the reason why. Katt Williams in this generation's Morris Day. I'm just waiting for Prince to whip him up a oberheim synthesized/linn drum song to complete the process...

Dez wrote the lyrics to "Cool". Lisa wrote the lyrics to "The Stick". One of the things that Morris told me was that Jesse wrote ALL of Jungle Love. Words and music. Jesse had recorded the demo and played it to P. But P told Jesse that if The Time were to do this song, P would HAVE to have co-writing credit, along with Morris. Then, to top that off, P erased some of Jesse's guitar solo when Jesse wasn't there. Morris said that P claimed the solo "didn't really fit the track" and edited it down without consulting with Jesse first. P said that him editing the solo made the song better. I've mentioned this on this site a few times already. The first was well over 2 years ago. Granted, P was the producer, but as a fellow guitarist, such as P and Jesse, that's really fucked up. And it was Jesse's song to boot. Morris said that when Jesse heard the final mix, he exploded. He really, really was pissed off at P. And was hurt that P would do that. Especially without talking to Jesse about it first. He never even considered Jesse. Morris said that everybody else, i.e., other band members, including members in P's band, thought it was a real low blow. But no one was really surprised cuz they knew how Prince was. Especially since P and Jesse never got along anyways.

You all need to brush up on Per Nilsen's DMSR book to answer these confusing questions. Generally speaking, the printed songwriting credits have little to do with actual input.

Well, the info I posted regarding Dez and Lisa is in D.M.S.R. The other info about Jesse isn't in the book cuz apparently, Per wasn't up on that!

I read DMSR, I was just wondering why Morris was taking all the credit on his semi-live Cd for all those songs.

As usual, my man is right. I've interviewed Jesse about this and this is basically the story he told me. He replaced the guitar with keys and it is just a different, not necessarily better, sound. I'd have to go back to the recording, but I think that the solo is actually mixed very low in the song, but don't quote me on that. That info is NOT directly from the PRINCE STUDIO SESSION book... but if it is right, it will be in there!

Great info BG, keep it coming! Thanx for laying down some knowledge.

I was never told anything about the song "Ice Cream Castles" from Morris. It does, the music, i.e., the guitar changes and chord choice, ooozes Jesse. The lyrics is Prince all the way. But the music, yeah, it sounds more like Jesse than Prince.

I totally realize that, thus me saying "Granted, P was the producer." BUT, like I also stated, P should have shown waaay more tact than he did. He could have easily rapped to Jesse about what he thought was best for the song. Instead of just cutting up Jesse's solo behind Jesse's back. If he didn't resent Jesse for getting the attention from a lot of women, he would have consulted with Jesse first. But they're was issues between those two cats. Damn near from the get. Jesse wasn't crazy about how P treated people and P didn't like cats in his clique getting female attention that either rivaled his own or in some cases, like Jesse's, where it was more than P's. Dez got a lot of female attention, but P didn't trip over that, cuz he knew Dez was a Christian and he wasn't going to cheat on his wife. P had to understand that not every woman or girl is going to find his super short, feminine acting, borderline crazy ass that attractive. At this stage, 81-83, P was still waaay out there in his appearance. Especially off stage. Many girls that dug Jesse would be too scared to fuck with P in a one on one situation. And that's real. I be reading the shit a lot of girls over in the Prince forum be posting. What they would do if they could get with P. They would run and fuck around and fall down some flight of stairs, trying to get away from P. That's what they would do.

Prince was probably jealous of Jesse's playing. That doesn't mean Prince is evil; he's just human is all. Everyone experiences jealousy at one time or another. Jesse could play like a mo'fo and his onstage persona wasn't anything to laugh at. Even on the old Soul Train show when the Time introduced themselves, Jesse got the loudest applause. Morris, perhaps a little envious, chimed in quickly with: "and I'm Morris and I'm cool" My point is, it happens to all of us. We get jealous. I wasn't there..but that's probably how it went down. Now if only we could get these bastards in the recording studio again...

I cannot wait until Prince sits down and does a "shoot" interview with someone and clears the air of all of this stuff. Who wrote what? What did you steal? Whose idea was that? It will be the greatest interview ever.

Hmm. You seem to be starting from this wacky assumption that credits on Prince (and associated) albums bear some resemblance to reality . . .

Lisa wrote the lyrics to "The Stick".

And if you listen to it, they didn't even really wipe out her guiding vocal track.
