The Vanity 6 CD was widely available in the 90s and very easy to find.I bought a copy in 1993 for only $11 at a local record store.I think it is now out of print,which is probably why it's so expensive (if you can find a copy).The Apollonia 6 CD is extremely rare.I've never even seen a copy.Here's my quick review of each album...


Vanity 6---Alot of fun! This album is funky,funny,sexy,and outrageous.Highlights include "Nasty Girl","Wet Dream","If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)" and "Bite The Beat".

Apollonia 6---Not nearly as strong as the Vanity 6 album.The album is uneven and lacks focus.But "Blue Limousine" is a real treat,featuring a powerful lead vocal by Brenda (who knew she could sing this good?).

Got VANITY 6 on CD in the 90's as well.....I've NEVER seen a copy of APOLLONIA 6 on CD. I have it on vinyl. BUT, if I ever saw it and the price was right, I'd do it!!!!
As far as comparing the two LP's, that's like comparing apples and oranges. Oops: did i say APPLES??? LOL!!!!! Anywayz, I like them BOTH for what they were when they were. Brenda's rap on "If A Girl Answers" is PRICELESS!!!! "Bite The Beat" is one of my all-time jams from back then. On the second LP, you have more of Brenda singing, which is NOT a bad thing. "A Million Miles" and "Some Kind Of Lover" are my two most favorite songs from THAT LP. Guess U could say I'm a closet Brenda fan.
My final points are these: Prince writes some of the FONKAYEST bass lines EVER!!!!
Case in point:
1)If A Girl Answers
2)A Million Miles
3)Some Kind Of Lover
And, if he had enough time to do it, the group coulda been CAT 6, or ROBIN POWER 6. Hell, how about MAYTE 6?????

Be aware that there are lots of pirated copies of the Vanity 6 CD floating around. I've bought it a few times and each time it turned out to be pirated and I had to return it to the seller. Some people don't care because the pirated copies sound great, but more than likely if you see one for $23 (even on Amazon) it's a fake.

The Apollonia 6 CD was only released in Japan and usually sells on ebay for between $200 and $300. Any non-Japanese version you find is a fake.

I got my CD for free. I burned it myself from my vinyl.

The V-6 album is a lot of fun. It has grown on me over the years and there are some really great cuts on it. Personally, I like all of the songs except for 1, but as I mentioned it has grown on me over the years. To the point that I have accumulated the outtakes and wished A-6 had never materialized so we would have gotten another V-6 album. Vanity was a better singer than Apples. My favorites are:

If a girl answers - Very funky in that Lady Cab Driver way and has a cool rap by Brenda.

Make Up - More like Fucked Up! A very sinister song, I think. The was Susan sings it and they way it's put together...very dark. The Soft Pink Truth did a remake a few years back. It's pretty genius.

Nasty Girl - Of course

He's So Dull - this one and Bite the beat are sorta homages to the 60's girl groups like the Sherelles. Cheesey and wonderful at the same time.

Drive Me Wild - The 12" is WAY WAAAAY better, but the song is cute and the lyrics are cool. Susan was a hidden gem!

I know I'd pay up to 30 for this album on CD if I saw it. I'd MUCH rather have a remastered version of it as the levels are VERY quiet. Well it came out in 82, so what should I expect.


Now the A-6 album...It has a few choice cuts on the album. But it is clear all the good stuff that was going to be on it were given to other artists and Prince clearly did not have his heart in the project as he did for V-6. I imagine he did it so there would be something to coincide with the Movie, Purple Rain. I don't have a lot of favorites on this one. Sex Shooter being the best song on it. I also like Ooh SHe SHe Wah Wah. I have heard others likeing other songs on it, but I have never grown to like the album.

That said, Unless you like the music or HAVE to have it for collectors sake, there is no reason to go and hunt this out. I would NOT pay anything over the original selling price for this.


So, you can hunt them down and pay up the butt for them, but I think a better idea would just get a copy form a friend or something. The sound quality, for me isn't worth it. And as said above, most likey all you are going to get is a copy anyway.

The first Sheila E album is the only Warner Bros./Paisley Park release that is still in print so that's why it's easy to find for a low price on CD.

Yeah, I would buy V6 & A6 for $23. I love both albums, can't ever decide which is better, people tend to hate on Apples cuz she can't sing but none of those girls are songstess'. Vanity herself just had a unique vocal arrangement (vamp) that was perfect for a Prince girl. Lets b4 real, Happy Birthday Mr Christian was funky as hell!
