Long and short of it -- Keisha Castle-Hughes, 16, the lead in Prince's Cinnamon Girl video, is pregnant according to today's reports on Zap2It.com. Yeah, sixteen! And she is due next spring. Here's the news, below ...

'Whale Rider'Teenage Star Pregnant
Baby is expected in the spring
October 6, 2006

Keisha Castle-Hughes, the youngest actress to receive a best actress Oscar nomination for "Whale Rider" at 13, will soon be a mother.

The now 16-year-old star and her boyfriend Bradley Hull, 19, are expecting their first child in the spring, reports People. The couple has been together for three years.

Castle-Hughes is best known for playing the pre-teen Paikea in 2002's critically acclaimed "Whale Rider," set in the director Niki Caro's native New Zealand. Like her character, the Australian-born actress is part Maori.

She also made a cameo as the Queen of Naboo in 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith."

Her latest role is playing the Virgin Mary in New Line Cinema's upcoming "The Nativity Story" by director Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen," "Lords of Dogtown"). The film centers on Mary and Joseph's (Oscar Isaac) life before and through the birth of Christ. Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo will play Mary's cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. The film will be released in December.

Oops! I was working on my post when you made this one! I was pretty shocked. At least she has money. It's pretty funny that she'll be playing the Virgin Mary in an upcoming movie. No padded belly needed!

Do you guys think that because she is a working professional that means she is mature enough to have a child at 16? I don't know. In our society today I doubt there are many 16 year olds who are emotionally mature enough to handle a child. I know she has the money and so she will be able to have decent child care and stuff, so I know that will make it easier. There is just something wrong about 16 year olds having kids (in 2006). Most relationships in Hollywood or otherwise don't last these days, so if it doesn't last for her I wonder how she'll handle it. Just because she seems so grown up doesn't mean she is. She is still 16! Just my opinion. Whatever the case, I hope she has a healthy child and the child is loved and well cared for, because to me that is the most important thing.

I agree with gemini. I don't condone teenage pregnacy across the board but each person is different. I was a teenage mom and I've raised a wonderful human being. I wouldn't have it any other way. We don't know Keisha's background, history or lifestyle. She may make a wonderful mother and raise a wonderful child. Yes, she will struggle because she is a mom and because she is a teenager. But to be so shocked and dismayed because she is a teenage mom? This has been going on forever. Some of the world's most "important" people were born to teen parents.

oh and my daughter's dad and I met when I was 14 and he was 16-17. Just when our hormones were kicking into high gear! That's not so unsual...

well...to me..16 year old is not a "guy" he's still just a kid too. there's only 3 years between them...when she's 30 and he's 33 it won't seem like much...or heck...21 and 24 or even 18 and 21. shrug

I'm not saying that teenage moms are all inadequate. I'm sure there are some that do a great job. And, when they do it's amazing because all odds are against them. I have nothing but respect for those that have done it and done it well to boot. I also think that there are LOTS of teen moms that don't do it well. Sure, there are some moms no matter what the age that don't do it well. But, I don't think most people can argue that when you are 16 it's just going to be harder. Sixteen year olds are NOT adults. Most 16 year olds probably don't have what it takes to handle such a huge responsibility.

I mean no disrespect to anyone. And, I'm not a prude Sos, I just don't think it's the ideal situation to have a 16 year old having a baby. I think our society does have too many adult expectations for teens these days. They aren't adults, we shouldn't expect them to act like them. biggrin

Yeah, I was talking about our society (meaning US), but I think my statement applies to most modernized/civilized countries. Man, I don't know! LOL. I just know that I think it would be really hard to be a 16 year old mom. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! lol

I had a history instructor who said that at one time there was no such thing as a "teenager" in many cultures. So it was quite common to parent at young ages until societal and cultural views changed about this. Of course, views have indeed changed.

But in my profession I have yet to come across any teenager mentally mature enough or financially secure enough to handle being a parent. I could say the same for some adults I've come across too.

she's 16 and they have been dating for 3 years... if I understand the laws on "age of consent" here, um he should do some time for that. but nobody that fathers these kids with teenage girls ever do time.
