Z Cult Question; Which Prince Guitarist Was The Most "Hendrixfied"?

As a black kid growing up in the 80's, who played guitar and was knee deep into Hendrix, rock and black bands who played rock such as Funkadelic, I always dug the fact that Prince had other bruthas around him who also played guitar and was into Jimi, musically and visually. There was of course, Prince, Dez and Jesse. Jellybean Johnson, although he played drums, also played lead guitar. But dealing mainly with the 3; Prince, Dez and Jesse, who seemed the most "Hendrixfied"? Meaning, who seemed the most influenced by Hendrix? Including musically, playing style, visually, the whole 9?

Good question B. Dez had the Jimi look down during the "Controversy" era with the Strat, headband, and leather but his style was a little more melodic and VH influenced (finger taps). P really didn't get his "Jimi" on 'til "Purple Rain" When he started playing with wah pedals the Jimi style really came out. But he kinda abandonded it (later on) and starting getting into the Santana thing.

I would have to give the "Jimi vibe" award to Jesse. The "Naked Soul" CD has the Jimi style, vocal, song titles, guitar feel and effects. Jesse even owns one of Jimi's white Strats and wah pedals. I think I'm gonna go with Jesse. Good thread as always B!

That's tough since Dez played a kewl "Star Spangled Banner" live on the 1999 tour and Jesse has that bluesy Hendrix vibe (Especially on "Bare My Naked Soul").

Jesse all the way for me - Dez had more of a rock image, but Jesse, licks-wise, had the Jimi vibe down pat. Prince, as great as he is on guitar, doesn't even rate as I always thought he had his own thing goin' on - I think that has a great deal to do with his custom-made instruments and unique (compressed) lead sound. I never thought we'd see P rockin' a strat! As BG stated earlier, when I hear P, I hear more of a Santana thing goin' on than Hendrix.

Thanx SPYZ! I knew u could dig it. And I agree witcha hands down. On ALL Points. Jesse first showed me his deep love for Jimi on "Fool's Paradise". Definately on "Bare My". That album is basically a tribute to Hendrix.

CUT 'EM JESSE!!!!! This video coulda EASILY been used in a "Miami Vice" episode back in tha day!!! lol lol The long version of this remix is SMOKIN'!!!! Especially when he "breaks it down" & revisits "Be Your Man" OFF THA HOOK!!!!!
And on top of that, the b-side "Fool's Paradise" solidifies Jesse's position to the question posed. Don't believe me??? Go back & re-visit BOTH!!!!!

Fool's Paradise is the first time J.J. showed how much like Hendrix he could sound. BUT, P has some Hendrix is his blood as well. P can evoke Hendrix in his playing without really sounding like Jimi. If nothing else, his choice of effects on a solo or just a vibrato during a solo can evoke Jimi. But yeah, Jesse, hands down. Jesse is a guitarist where as P is a multi- talented cat who can burn on guitar.
