A few years ago Ani DiFranco got to record with an idol, Prince, who in turn is a big fan of hers.
It was "awesome and brief and thrilling and intimidating," she says.

Especially intimidating.

"I'm not a schooled guitar player. I write songs, but I don't know what key they're in. It's always funny to me," she says, "to watch my band members say 'Yeah, it's an E 7th diminished, but then it kinda goes into the A minor sustained.' Huh?"

Then she got the call to work with Prince on I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore.

"I showed up at Paisley Park (his studio) and he had this ballad he played on voice and piano. He wants me to play guitar on it. He says 'It's in G' and sends me into the room. I'm like 'What the (expletive)? What is G?' I'd never heard the tune before. This is not the kind of player I am. I'm totally on the hot seat."

Prince toyed with her a bit.

"He's looking at me through the glass. Before he even pushed play he said 'Did you get that?' I said 'Huh?' and he laughed. He could tell I was nervous," she says. "I had five minutes, I swear. He said 'I'm going to punch it in right here.' Then it was over. I was like, '(Expletive). G?'"

such a waste of talent...why oh why does carmen get a full album of princeness yet this is his only collaboration with ani?
