Why Is Prince Hyping This...ick Thread The bashing began before anyone knew about her fashion choices. I think this post by SpecialEd sums up the Tamar situation quite nicely. There's a lot of naive optimism in those who don't face up to colour prejudice. As beautiful as Tamar is by African beauty standards it's not by chance that Beyonce, Mya, Ashanti, Ciara etc are all lighter skinned, in straight wigs and with less negroid features.
Tamar hasn't got the look to endear herself to western mainstream audiences. Both black and whites have been engineered to accept only the more dilluted versions of black womanhood and image is as important as the music itself to many. The dancing twins will always get more male attention than Tamar with their accessible look. A lot of fans here just have problems with Prince finally embracing his black roots of course in recent times. Both via song lyrics and who he surrounds himself with. But you know what? They can criticize Tamar if they want to, and use all their energy posting insults and not getting paid for it, LMAO, but whether any of us like it or not, Tamar is Prince's Protege, and that's all there is to it, take it or leave it! I think Princes message of "longivity of real music and artistic freedom" more than anything is the reason for Prince and Tamar working together. But the majority of the people who have been to the shows where she has been performing so far are Prince fans, because, well, he has been present. He is the background headliner. We will see Tamar's fan base once she has shows on her own, which I hope happens soon. Duggs said: I thought some of your comments were arrogant in reguards to Tamar. Shes on her myspace trying to promote her songs with her fans, how does that show anything other than her trying to handle her business? How was anything I said about Tamar arrogant? In regards to this topic, I haven't offended or defended Tamar's appearance. I've been neutral. When I read her blog however, I received a feeling of plea and desperation in her words. There are many ways people can request support, and her way is like a form of begging to me. There is just something about her use of the word "please" that stands out. I may be wrong, and if that's what U are considering arrogant, then I'm sorry. But that is just my own "reading between the lines" I guess. Duggs said: I think Princes message of "longivity of real music and artistic freedom" more than anything is the reason for Prince and Tamar working together. I agree, which is why I typed that. I believe that Prince is working with Tamar because of her musical talent. And it's not about money all the time. That's what warps so many of these new artists. They concentrate more on what they're going to receive rather than what they are giving to the world. Duggs said: Prince is a fan of Tamar, he thinks of her as a true artists and gives her that respect I dont see why Prince fans dont do the same I don't know of anyone in this thread that hasn't respected Tamar musically. I can dig that, but using RhondaB is a bad example because most of us know that RhondaB is veteran orger who is very good at explaining her stance when an explanation is requested. Where's the room for open discussion if you're going to get all defensive on someone elses behalf if people like myself, silverandgold or anyone else challenges their original thought? I mean that's all fine and good if they just want to type statements like that and never appear in the thread again. But what's the harm in probing further opinions of those who appear in thread after thread about Tamar venting that same dislike for Tamar's appearance. I could leave the statement alone if it were qualified with a "I don't think people with wide eyes are attractive." But for some reason, Tamar has to be likened to down syndrome, aliens and crack babies. Honestly, I think Mayte's eyes were just as spread apart as Tamar's... don't believe me? Look at the Child of the Sun LP cover. I think race is the underlying reason and I don't see the harm in calling folks out on it especially when they don't prove otherwise. [Edited 8/2/06 15:56pm] BSK, you are absolutely right about Mayte's eyes being just as spread apart as Tamar's. In fact, this was the first immediate similarities that I noticed between two ladies. Oh Lord, yeah like thta's you can notice is thta big 10 mile wide space between her eyes,m I compared her to a locust or a praying mantis. Look at her pics and my thread here:
http://www.prince.org/msg/5/193119 quote: Damn ewwwww uh what's up with that 10 foot space between her e y e s? Makes her look like a praying mantis or something. How old is she? she kinda looks like Lauryn Hill of the Fugees, but that 10 mile wide space between her eyes and her high forehead makes her look deformed, IMO. If this is Prince's new gimmick, I can't wait to experience Michael Jackson's comeback! That's just like the singer Brandy, she has a mile wide space between her eyes also. I just don;t get why the pic of her with the milk and honey all over her has to be SO RED? How young is she becasue she looks like 20? Did she approach Prince or when did he find her? Also, who are her female pop idols? She has charisma and seems friendly, and approachable... I can't wait for her debut album. | |
