I just heard that Universal records put the album on hold, AGAIN! I don't think it will ever see the light of day.

What's the hold up? Is it the label or is it Prince?

I haven't been waiting for the album, but I feel sorry for the girl.
That sucks.

This whole year has been kinda weird...

I get the impression that P and Tamar are making it all up as they go along

They're probably hoping Prince will get bored of it and walk away like he does most other people's projects, and then they'll drop a lot of the songs, bring in a new producer, and have something they can actually market to today's consumer. Peace!

Can't help thinking that Prince did some deal with Universal that he would sign on board with them for 3121 only if they also released Tamar's album, and now they are disappointed with Prince's efforts promoting his own release that they are trying to use Tamar's album as a bargaining chip to get him to do more stuff and get the figures for the album up. Or that they didn't sell enough of 3121 and know that Tamar's album will likely end up losing money for them.

Yea Prince made a deal with Universal for 3121 and Tamar. I think its the labels job to get the figures up. What has Universal really done that he couldnt do himself?

I think Universal is scared of Prince they want some of that Purple Rain money. So there not being aggressive with their marketing stragedy cause they dont wanna offend P.

I dont see how the label could use Tamar's album as barganing chip. That means they would have ownership of the album, i dont see Prince giveing any Major record labels rights to his music.

Universal is on the fence with the Prince and Tamar project. Prince delivered them a hot album that went gold because hes Prince, its on the label to push it to platnium plus status.
The label is only getting a piece of the Pie when working with Prince so thats gotta affect how business is done.

I think the only way to get figures up is for the artist and label to work together. On his own Prince couldn't distribute CDs to shops all over the world, and couldn't get a number 1 album. Although you could argue that Universal haven't done as good a job as Sony did with Musicology, they managed to get a million sold in the USA whereas Universal have only sold half that with 3121.



They probably get more from other artists who are signed up for multi-album deals and have signed away their royalties, than Prince who hasn't sold in big numbers since Diamonds & Pearls and who insists on a big share of the profits. As I see it, the only way Universal could make much money out of the deal was if they DID have an aggressive marketing campaign and sold bucket-loads - but with an artist reluctant to play the industry game, that's difficult.



A bargaining chip in the sense that they have the rights to distribute the album but can keep putting it off indefinately until Prince does what they want him to do. If he's eager to release the album, then he may have to give in to some of Universal's demands. Just theorising, of course.



It's been out for months and only just creeping upto the half a million gold mark, and that's after 3 singles. It's doubtful they could push it to a million without a major marketing campaign by Prince including a tour, which is getting a bit late now.

As you say, the less the label gets from the deal, the less inclined they are to go all out promoting Prince.

I pre-ordered Tamar's cd from Amazon.com
& today I recieved an e-mail from them saying
the cd would be released sooner than expected
but no more info or date was provided.
When I look up the details of my order
it lists the earliest possible delivery date as August 17th.

That's good that it may come out early. I was a bit concerned when I looked up Tamar on that trademark site, I believe it said the trademark was abandoned. Not knowing much about that stuff and not knowing what that really meant if anything It'll be great if her album comes out early.
