Sheila E.

I got into Prince BECAUSE of Sheila (went to PR tour to see her).

The ultimate is them together, but I love a solo Sheila show!

Agree... her light-jazz/gospel stuff is so-so, but I'd be down for a Sheila funk show over a Prince gig ANYday.

What are they doing now? They're hella busy working with nearly everyone in the biz is what they're doing. There's nearly no name in music that isn't trying to get a piece of them, which is a lot more than I can say for Prince.

Let's break this down, eh?

Eric Clapton wants to collaborate with Wendy & Lisa.

The Twinz want to collaborate with Prince.

Hmmmm.

Can I say (I already have here many times) that I love, love, love The Like album produced by Wendy? And before anyone says "the who?" keep in mind these are the daughters of industry vets whose big-name fathers would not let just anyone handle production duties on their daughters' first big record.

bored Another one of those kind of responses.

Wendy and Lisa aren't exactly my favorites to come from the Prince camp but just because someone is no longer heard of these days does not mean they weren't great. Actually, being heard all over the radio these days is a sign of not being great and Prince himself has problems getting airplay.

Here here... and in retrospect, it seems that Wendy & Lisa probably had more to do with Prince's strong, melodic output in the '80s than previously suggested.

Excellent point.

There's a great documentary coming out soon about this very issue - the Clear Channelling of music, if you want to call in that, and how it's all about the packaging. Includes Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Branford Marsalis, (Susannah's hubby) Doyle Bramhall II, Calexico - lots of under the radar types, all talking about the state of the music biz. I strongly recommend it.

And, yes about Prince. I personally think the quality of his work is in decline. AND, I think that has nothing to do with his trouble getting airplay. He's still better than much of what's out there. Indie stations still play him. (As a matter of fact, a lot of indie stations play Wendy & Lisa now and again.) The problem is, there aren't a lot of indie stations left.

Are you kidding me? I like Wendy & Lisa, but you make it sound like Prince is nothing compared to them.

Make no mistake, EVERYONE in the music industry would like to work with Prince. Everyone. It's Prince who turns anyone down.

I haven't really seen that to be the case since Maceo and Ani (years ago now) but I'll take your word for it.

I do have to say that the turning down is interesting, too. I've thought for a very long time that Prince had a hard time working with anyone who might have something to contribute back or teach him, which is why he tends to work with some real hacks and/or get rid of the folks that aren't. (Sheila is a very rare example of someone that is really Prince's equal that he's kept around for a while without tension.)

Most strong and self-confident artists are pleased to work with others who can really challenge them. But in your own words, Prince turns those folks down. Why is that?

Yuck, there's no way I'm a fam.

Look, it's pretty simple. It doesn't matter why Prince turns people down, as that's not even the topic I was discussing.

The point is that you made it sound like Wendy and Lisa's cellphones were ringing every minute from people in the industry begging to work with them, while that poor bum Prince struggles to pay the bills.

You were being utterly dismissive of what a huge force Prince is to people in the industry. Every single artist alive would love to work with the guy; he's an admired legend.
