novi novog Here is one associated artist that never got recognition on this site.
She played on a lot of prince songs and was a major player and inspiration. Novi Novog: Viola Novi Novog and her viola have been heard and seen on recordings, films and concert stages all over the world. She is one of LA's top session musicians, with a long list of credits including solos on Prince's "Purple Rain" and "Raspberry Beret," The Doobie Brothers' "Black Water", and album appearances for such diverse artists as Shaun Colvin, Bonnie Raitt, Terrance Trent D'Arby, Carly Simon, 10,000 Maniacs, Cher, James Taylor, Spinal Tap, Madonna, Tom Petty, Tangerine Dream and WZMG & The Coot. Her touring credits include such names as Frank Zappa, The Doobie Brothers, Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Warnes. Novi has recorded several albums with her own groups - Freeway Philharmonic (Sheffield Lab), Chunky, Novi & Ernie featuring her cousin Lauren Wood (Warner Bros. Records) and Sumner (Elektra/Asylum). Novi combines the background and training of the most intense classical disciplines with the improvising and listening abilities of a great jazz musician. She is one of the most versatile musicians in the Los Angeles scene, equally at home in classical, jazz, pop or rock styles. novi novog from: jon naurin (naurin@mbox300.swopnet.se) she was never part of a touring band. i'm not sure, but looking at the personel on the photo in the btb2 scrapbook, i've always assumed that this band was sort of a transition phase between the spring and fall 1975 bands. or rather, an early version of the fall band. and judging from the photo, andre lewis wasn't in the band by then. from: charles ulrich (ulrich@sfu.ca) violist novi novog rehearsed with fz in the summer of 1975, but decided not to tour with him. novi now plays in a band called freeway philharmonic: http://www.songs.com/fp/index.html. novi doesn't seem to be on e-mail herself, but i've sent questions through her bandmate larry tuttle twice and received replies both times. here's what they said: [from 12/5/97:] >the word from novi is: she never made it on to any of the zappa albums. she was scheduled to be in the band with frank and napoleon murphy brock (who was supposed to hold her upside down over the audience), but novi (being novi) decided to stay loyal to her own band with her cousin - chunky, novi and ernie. novi credits frank with encouraging her to make the move from classical viola to electric viola. he liked the sound of "stinky", her barcus-berry ax. I always looked for Novi on other albums' credits. I can tell you, I found her a lot on non-Prince reocrdings! There must be much more albums she played on... just judging upon the fact that apart from the purple recordings, Scott Weiland and Jennifer Warnes there's none of mine albums on your list. I think Novi was interviewed for some UPTOWN pubications. I'd have to go back and check my notes, but I seem to remember this.
