Peter Micheal is the father, at 23 he had some kids already and this particular baby mama was working in the industry someplace and it was easier for him to keep her so he had the baby all the time everywhere, including backstage at on the purple rain tour. They decided "as a couple" to let Lionel and Brenda adopt Nicole, the Escovedo's kept up with this baby until Lionel and Brenda divorced ( remember how ugly that was) and then it was decided that her life was less complicated if the Escovedos stepped back. There was no abandonment, she always knew who her family was, if I remember correctly Lionel is Zina's godfather. Anyway, it was a choice that was made.

According to an April 2006 Tatler magazine interview with Nicole, her biological father was a drummer who worked with Lionel Richie; her biological mother was a backstage assistant for Lionel. When Nicole was three, Lionel and his wife Brenda Harvey-Richie informally adopted her and raised her as their daughter.
