To get someone else who didn't resemble Vanity would have fucked up the whole vibe that had already been laid. Folks were ALREADY like "Who in the hell is THIS?! Where's Vanity?!"

I read that when Prince found Apollonia, he took her to a club where he knew Vanity hung out and paraded her on the dance floor for Vanity to see as kind of a way to let her know she could be easily replaced. Maybe that's why he wanted someone that looked so similar....just to piss Vanity off.  Andy is a four letter word. | |

That would have been an interesting choice.One advantage is that she was already well-known,which would have helped 'Purple Rain'.Plus,she can actually sing and act.But I wonder...would she have accepted a role like this? She always had such a wholesome image.It's hard to imagine her up there on stage,wearing lingerie and telling someone to "kiss her gun",lol. Irene Cara was so sexy back then, but like Vanity she had a little problem with the white lines back then too and we all know Prince ain't about no drugs, but it is an interesting thought. I would have really liked to have seen Vanity play Vanity. She was without a doubt fine as they come and having seen her with mine own eyes... I can say YUP!!! that's the truth.
Apples took me by surprise and I was never truly satisfied with the replacement. The thing that made Vanity 6 was Denise herself.. a mixture of black and who know's what else. She has a sexuality all her own... her own charisma. You can't really compare her to anyone. Appolonia is also in a class herself. Just like Prince, being an unidentifiable personality at the time, an already known actress would not have worked. It was the mystery of the unknowns that pulled off the movie. "The Dark Prince"
