Oh, for the love of...Philip C. was his hairdresser from that time period. Look at the credits on your tourbooks.

U lie wink .
Hairdresser on the Nude Tour program is Earl Jones.

Sorry, I got it mixed up - I meant the credits for the movie.

From imdb:

Phillip Carreon .... hair stylist

Hi Michael. I think it's really cool that you are offering so much of your time to Prince fans here. It's certainly a unique opportunity for many of us.

Two questions:

1) What do you remember from filming the video for "Partyman"? Did Prince do anything funny like stay in character in between shots? At the end, the video implies that there will be more videos in the same vein. Did Prince have plans at any time to do more videos for Batman in character like "Partyman"? Perhaps "Electric Chair" or "Vicki Waiting"?

2) In '95, you guys performed in Dublin at a club. Bono came on-stage to do "The Cross" with Prince. I think he forgot most of the words, which happens to him quite a bit, even on his own songs. Did Prince every say anything about it afterwards? Did Bono ask to sing with Prince or did Prince invite him? I know that Prince has dissed U2 many times, but he seems to like Bono and has publicly complimented him, but not the group.

Thanks.

the "partyman" shoot was one of the first things i did with prince. it was a very standard video shoot, long, hot hours. shot in culver city, ca. sylvester stallone and kurt russell were shooting "tango and cash", and pee wee herman was shooting the sequel to "big adventure", i think.
no, prince didn't stay in character. he was too busy directing.
i don't know of any plans to shoot any other videos using that character..

no, prince never said anything about bono forgetting the words.
bono asked to sing that one.

A monment in time with McGoo

At the main show b4 the club gig, Prince & I got into it on stage ( 4 reasons I can't talk about right now )lets just say we were ready to fight! So later that night at the club gig, Michael B. start's out the night with a MB drum solo ( if you don't know what a MB drum solo is, well, ok u don't then).Just about 10 or 15 strokes into him just thinking about what his not going to do to the drums, he puts a hole in the top snare drum head. OOOOO sh-t, I say ( I don't say those type of word any more), Michael looks at me and tells me with his eyes, Goo take care of this fast, Prince looks at me and ask's me what r u going to do about that, because I'm not stopping him during his solo.

As I'm on the floor on my back changing the snare drum (I said this is a MB drum solo u can't change anything over the top)P is standing behind Michael telling him to go, go, and looking at me at the same time. U c this all goes back to the thing on stage at the main gig. DONE, snare drum changed in record time, my boy is just now starting to get MAD at them drums (4 Me & Him).If you have the bootleg CD then you'll hear P telling me to take a solo on the congo's. That was his way of saying I'm sorry Goo.

there were several.. "oooh, this i need" and "love's no fun" from elisa fiorillo's album were two. "letter 4 miles" was another. it happened off and on, during my tenure..

"schoolyard" was supposed to be on "diamonds and pearls".. that's all i know about it..

yes. jef and i talk about it from time to time.
the guy who produced "news from the jungle" signed jef lee to a solo deal, though. so, he's kinda concentrated on that right now, and another project with tony hymas, called "ursus minor", which is sick..

sonny still regularly tours with giorgia, in italy. and, since i officially joined soul asylum, my time is not exactly my own. we're gearing up for a new record coming out on july 11.. we'll be on the tonight show, the night before that.

Do U have any info on the Minneapolis project - the Group. The only single that was released was "MPLS"

Did U play drums on this project. THe only band member I can tell 4 sure is SOnny T. beyond that, even though each band member gets a "shout-out" the only name i can hear clearly is "sonny T."

and while on the subject of your boy Sonny T. - How did he feel about singing lead vocals ont he Exodus project? Was this really 2 hide Prince's involvement or did Prince really like Sonny's voice?

Speaking of "Love's no Fun" - i was just listening 2 that track the other day. Iv'e said it b4 but the way U play the drums R so distinctive. Was there something different 2 the snare u used?

"scottie - shake something" what was he supposed 2 shake? The soundboard?

the group was gonna be called "mpls"...
it was supposed to be for a saturday morning cartoon.
prince had an animated video mocked up, with dancing buildings, and whatnot..
no, i had nothing to do with that.

prince really likes almost everything about sonny. sonny was a major influence on prince, growing up.. he was always telling me stories about sonny..
i don't think prince ever considered himself to be "hiding" his involvement.. he just goes through phases where he'd rather be more of an ensemble player, rather than the total focal point..

i don't remember what snare i played on those sessions..

he was my drum tech.. he was shaking a tambourine.. you can hear it, faintly, in the distance, if you turn up your stereo..

in the entire time i was with prince, i threw one set of sticks. i was at wembley arena. and it scared the security staff so bad, that i never did it again.
apparently, something happened where sheila e. threw out some sticks, and i think she injured someone's eye. they told me, "man, don't do it.."
so, i never did it, again..

i imagine soul asylum will get down south. probably not till fall, however.

lol Yeah but in the book Posessed I did remember Rosie saying you were cool to be around Mr. Bland....she just felt uncomfortable around the other guys and annoyed with Prince when he assumed a dismissive air when she brought up her concerns.

Michael - A couple questions:

1) Back in the mid nineties during the "Gold" period when I used to see you jam at Paisley all the time Prince was quite into swearing on songs like P Control, stuff from Exodus etc. Now he has gone the other way and taks all cuss words out of his songs. Do you care about such things or do you just go along with whoever you are playing with and not worry about it?

2) Sort of on the same theme, Prince has his religious beliefs, I know with the Sons of the Almighty project that you must have yours too. Have you ever been in a situation playing with anyone where something they played made you feel uncomfortable because it went against your own religious, political or personal beliefs? Has there ever been or would there ever be a time when you said "hey, I can't play that."

I have enjoyed watching and listening to you play in the NPG and also in Dr. Mambo's Combo, with Paul Westerberg, Har Mar Superstar and now Soul Asylum (I went to high school with Danny and Karl so I go way back with them, think I saw their first gig ever!)

My final question has to do with Soul Asylum:

3) I think you and Tommy really seem to gel and work great together as a rhythm section. You guys always seem to be having a lot of fun too! All of a sudden Soul Asylum is gearing up to do more touring, new album coming out, Tonight show performance and at the same time I see lots of hoopla about Guns 'N Roses playing in Europe this Summer etc. etc. Is this gonna be a conflict for Tommy? Is he gonna stick with you and Soul Asylum or is he gonna play with G 'n' R? I don't see how he can be in two places at once!

Thanks man!

1. i care. but i can't control how other people choose to express themselves. it's kinda like working at honeywell, building detonators.
even though i work on the assembly line, it's not up to me to drop the bomb.. that's for someone else to deal with.. i'm just doing my job.

2. there was a moment during the recording of some dialogue for the exodus album, where prince tried to encourage me to say something i didn't feel comfortable saying.. and i didn't say it.
i can also honestly also say that i really didn't enjoy playing "p control" on television. i didn't tell my mom we were gonna be on. she just happened to turn on vh-1 while we were on.
she asked, "why didn't you tell me you were going to be on tv?"
i told her, "i didn't want you to see THAT!!"
she said, "i know he's a vulgar man.. i just wanted to see you on television.." he funny thing is, even playing that song, live, was difficult for me. i would always end up looking around the venue, into the faces of young girls, and feeling a little ashamed, but having to find a way to play the song with the correct intent.. 'cause that was my job. to play what prince wants to play. and if i didn't want to, i should've quit.
the job is the job. it was kinda like playing simon says... for seven years...LOL

3. we don't really know, yet, how things are gonna work out with tommy and GNR. we're hoping for the best: axl snaps, cancels dates, and tommy comes back to us.. otherwise, we will simply have to find another rock star bass player.. not easy, but nothing has been, getting this band to stay together, finish an album, and get a proper label with financial backing and a real promotional budget.. we've come to far to turn around. we have an album to sell, and tv appearances to do, with or without tommy. but, we want him, and we'll miss him if he never returns..

But wasn't the lyrics of the song really positive (and also kinda feminist?) I know some of the language is harsh but I actually thought the song was a very positive message for women.

Michael,

Thanks for all the stories and "insider information". I love this kind of stuff.

1) In your estimate, how many total albums (all artists) have you appeared on?

2) Of all the material you recorder with Prince, how much of it has actually been released?

3) What is the funnest experience you have ever had in the studio/on tour?

'cause that was my job. to play what prince wants to play..

But wasn't the lyrics of the song really positive (and also kinda feminist?) I know some of the language is harsh but I actually thought the song was a very positive message for women.

so, in your opinion, it's ok to use harsh language as a dramatical device to get people's attention, if you really mean to say something positive?
not sure if i buy that..
a positive message shouldn't have to be cloaked in controversy to get people's attention. gandhi didn't do it. mlk didn't do it. malcolm x didn't do it. i'll give you this, though... gloria steinem did have an effect on the movement, when she burned her bra.. so i guess, who's to say?
but, i'm also considering that prince's primary goal, as a songwriter, is to provoke. and, since we live in a sexually repressed society, using dirty language is a quick way to stir the masses.. but it's an indirect way to get a positive message across..
i don't remember the lyrics well enough to say, conclusively, whether they were positive or not. i do remember getting the impression that it was about girl named "pussy control" using her sexuality as well as her mind to achieve her goals in life.. but, who's listening to the lyrics on the verse? not many..
all my mom knows is that someone was singing about "pussy", and a bunch of g strings fell from the ceiling, onto the audience.. that's all karl lagerfeld knew, too.. we sat next to him, for the rest of the ceremony.. LOL
