Wendy Melvoin: Guitar Goddess

http://www.argusleader.co...60334/1005

Courtney Love and Avril Lavigne may draw recognition as popular girl guitarists, but they're just strummers sifting through chords.

That's cool, because we need good rhythm guitar players. But here's a list of some women who went far beyond basic chords to become influential and impressive stylists or lead players.

Joni Mitchell

Acknowledged more as a brilliant songwriter from the folk-rock movement, Mitchell was equally as impressive on the guitar.

"Joni Mitchell is a really innovative acoustic guitar player," says Brad Tolinski, editor-in-chief at Guitar World magazine. "You talk to somebody like Jimmy Page who even was influenced by her strange tunings and the way she played."

Bonnie Raitt

The matriarch of electric blues, Raitt has the respect of Buddy King, which is like saying she can play with anybody.

"She may be one of the best slide guitarists - man or women," Tolinski says.

Kaki King

A La Guitara accomplice who isn't a household name, King's percussive, popping melodies and picking has made her a rising guitar star.

"She's somebody who has created a new voice," Tolinski says. "It's rare."

Wendy Melvoin
Allmusic.com calls Prince's "Purple Rain" one of the most exciting albums ever made. Credit some of the excitement to guitarist Melvoin, a largely unheralded female guitarist.

"To play with Prince you better be on your damn toes. She was really good," Tolinski says.

Jennifer Batten

Another player on the "La Guitara" album, Batten's also an overlooked guitarist. But, her resume speaks volumes. She's played for Michael Jackson and was part of Jeff Beck's touring band.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

No one ever would've heard of Wendy if Prince hadn't hired her.

They know who she is because she played with PRINCE during his heyday. She got to play a character in a movie that was a big hit and play with Prince during his biggest hits; obviously she's gonna be more well-known.
