Shelia E. as a Artist during Her time with Prince

did you enjoy Her Work fully&See Her as Her Own Artist? or did you feel She was doing a 2nd-Rate Morris Day Routine as a Artist?? did you feel Prince Overshadowed Her as a Artist in Her Own Right?

I really did enjoy Shelia E back in the 80s and still do today. Maybe her first 2 lps were heavily inspired by Prince but Sex Cymbol and Shelia E weren't and even if Prince did put his stamp of approval on them they were very good. Shelia will always be a very talented drummer and performer and she proved that at the Celebration. I enjoyed her workshop and her performance later that night. She is really Cool! I'll always be a fan.

It's good that Prince brought Sheila E. to the forefront, but in many ways she is and was an artist in her own right. In '84 she looked and sounded like a female version of Prince, which, I think, was his idea. Instead, she should've been doing then what she's doing now. No musician of her caliber should've been caught singing a song like "Oliver's House." As much as I liked Vanity 6, Sheila E. was way beyond that in terms of musicianship, and yet Prince tried to put her in that same type of Vanity/Apollonia mold. It'd be like Prince today asking Blackwell to get out from behind his drums to join B2K or something. Anyway, it's good to see that the focus is back where it belongs -- on musicianship and spirituality.

I regret that she didn't tour much more, particularly for her last paisley park album & in Europe, she could have make one more album with Prince imo

"Oliver's House" was the JAM! What in the world is wrong with THAT song?

It's the "girl group" lyrics and the way it's sung that turns me off from that song. But, I know, those were the 80s and that's how it was then. Many songs are ruined for me because of the lyrics. Now, "Save the People" <-- there's a cool song!

Here's a good interview with Sheila from November last year:

I know the link looks strange, but trust me -- it really is an interview with Sheila.
