Someone, I think it was Tyka Nelson, said that John L. Nelson had the original Minneapolis sound. I'd be curious to hear more of his music to hear if there's a connection.

The 2nd runner up would have to be Janet Jackson via Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis...

I'd say New Edition and The Jets, definitely.

But definitely Janet Jackson is the #1 non-Prince-related person using that sound, especially since most of it comes from Flyte Tyme.

I thought Rick James' Mary Jane Girls had a very Minneapolis sound...my boyfriend who isn't a Prince fan...was listeing to "In my House" extended version and he remarked how it sounded like a "Prince" song.

Ebonee Webb and Bobby Nunn had that sound before Prince became huge. Afterwards, these groups either had that sound on one or two songs and some of them completely had that sound:

Ready For The World
Krystol
Chaka Khan
The Egyptian Lover
The Jets
Georgio
Wynd Chymes (a local group)
Madame X
Vesta Williams
The Deele
The Barkays
All the ex Prince protegees and their productions.
Andy is a four letter word.

That song definitely Prince/ Minnie-sound.

I wore that tape out back in the day. Took me forever to get the CD on ebay... very hard to find but extremely funky if you like Bernadette Cooper and Klymaxx.
