The info from the book DMSR, Lisa,Wendy, Fink and P are credited to writing this jam. It was originally cut in 83 for the second Vanity 6 album. It was then re-cut in early 84 for the Apples 6 album, pulled again for P's b-side. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I'm assuming the one you're talking about has some of the guitar effects from the end of Private Joy in it, right? If so, this is definitely a fan-made (or looped) mix. There IS an official version out there that lasts like 7 minutes (I'm not sure of the exact length), but it's not circulating, unfortunately. This is probably my all-time favorite Prince jam, though, and it'd be nice if he resurrected this song for his upcoming tour (though hearing it now live just can't compare to the mind-blowing experience of hearing it for the first time back when I bought the Let's Go Crazy 12"!!!). say what? fo wheel? 17 Days is clearly ALL Prince. Yeah... Right down 2 the Bass.
In terms of the "2 cigarettes" line, don't forget that Prince, like many writers, writes from other perspectives... other than just his own. Peace. G. Oh... Still 1 of my fav jams of all. . [Edited 4/3/06 12:49pm] "He's a musician's musician..."

Writing credit can come from any lyrical or musical contribution 2 the piece... It has NOTHING 2 do with the recorded version, in terms of performance credit. It could've been 1 of those things where Prince liked something they were doing, and then recorded his version of it, probably totally different than what the original idea was, and thus, the TOTAL Princely feel and sound. That is undeniably his drum programming, his bassline, his funky-ass distorted guitar part in the beginning, etc, etc, etc. "He's a musician's musician..."

I still say that's Mark on bass though. Trust me, I KNOW that P is hella funky on bass, that goes without saying. The bassline just has Mark's "vibe" on it to me. The muffled "drag" stroke Mark used. I see that Mark was in on the jamming part of the song with Lisa, Wendy and Fink, although Lisa, Wendy and Matt were the only ones, along with P, that got writing credit. It's hard 2 tell with the Bass, 'cause Mark had the Minneapolis style down, man. I think with the effect on it, and because of that slowly bent (or slid) note, that it is Prince. I really don't think that Wendy, Lisa, and Matt R on the recorded release. They may have the writing credit 4 some riffs they came up with, but I think Prince recorded this all by himself. He's done this a few times. Even though people on the ORG have focused on Prince NOT giving writing credits 2 others, he has more often been over generous with the credits, particularly with the Revolution (Parade, especially), and with the Lovesexy album, where he credits everyone fully, and his credit is last, with: "Prince: Whatever." I just downloaded a rehearsal version where Prince sings it and plays piano, without a band. It´s 6:30 long. Does somebody know which rehearsal is it? Very nice version BTW

It's a rehearsal he did on the piano back in 1983. I don't have the exact date off the top of my head, but someone with DMSR in front of them should know a bit more. It can be found on "Eavesdropped On Intimate Moments", among other boots as well. He did several others like "Case Of You", "Purple Rain", and "Purple Music" too.

I sort of knew that Prince did most of 17 days on the recorded version and maybe Brownmark might had add bits of his bass here and there. He might have give Matt, Lisa, and Wendy some credit because they might had contribute ideas to unrelease version and also help to put some money into their pockets. Anyway Prince has his way of creditng people. Hell, that was what Prince did with his father on ATWIAD and his father barely lift a finger.

WillyWonka said: 17 Days is one of the songs that made me a Prince fan. The first time I heard it was on a jukebox somewhere (I'd barely begun getting into Prince then, and I remember when I saw it listed as a selection on the jukebox, I was thrilled because I'd never heard it before) I used to hang out when I was younger.
That song hooked me bigtime. I would play it over and over and over again on that damn jukebox til finally I bought the 12" for myself. Same for me--17 Days is the song that changed me from a casual Prince fan to a hardcore fan. I used to go to Prince night at Berlin (Chicago) and they would play this song I loved, with the lines, 'Let the rain come down, let the rain come down.' I actually had the B-sides CD but had NEVER listened to it until my then boyfriend told me the song I loved was on that disc! After that I played 17 Days morning, noon, and night... It's still my favorite Prince song. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

WORD.
What I forgot 2 mention above, is that 17 Days is my fav 12"/B-Side of all. I have them all on vinyl, and I'm so glad I was a part of that generation that used 2 go 2 the record store, and freak out when I saw a new Prince 12". Remember the incredible shock U'd get when U heard an unreleased track, and it was as amazing as 17 Days? Granted, there were a few that did that 2 me. "He's a musician's musician..."

If someone asked me what the Revolution sounded like, I would play them "17 Days" and leave it at that. I don't care much who wrote and played... it's just a piece of hypnotic magic. No one else could sound like that. God, what a perfect Prince & The Revolution song. ...: s l o w l y c a n d l e b u r n s :...

Well, we know Lisa is on backing vocals on the chorus. I still say it's Mark on bass, dammit! (smile). Yeah, like u, I have ALL of the 12' on wax. I wrote a long ass thread awhile back regarding my journey on getting Little Red Corvette 12' when it was first released. That was a TOTALLY different time back then. Even the 45 singles, when P would have an unrealeased b-side like a sorry ass cut like "Horny Toad", I was thrilled. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. I agreed! I want to hear the unreleased version too. I still think that Prince done most of the recorded version.
