Associated artist song of the day: "I Don't Wanna Leave You" by The Time (1982)

This is my favorite Time song, taken from their best album 'What Time Is It'.Although it was never released as a single, this song received some airplay on our local R&B radio station.Show your love for this amazing jam!

music "I Don't Wanna Leave You" headbang

(written by Prince)

People say you run around
I don't even care
I could never hold you down
I don't even dare
I just wanna play your game
no matter what the rules
I've met an awful lot of dames
but not quite as bad as you

Let me try to love U
I know I could
One night to hold you
just ain't no good

(chorus)
I don't wanna leave you
I don't wanna go
Can't you see I need you
girl,I need you so

I will be your doctor babe
I'll make you feel alright,alright
I've got something to keep you warm
on a cold lonely night, now turn out the light
I will never tie you down
cause I know you wanna be free,so free
say you'll let me come around
say you wanna be with me,oh baby please

Let me try to love you
I know I could
One night to hold you
just ain't no good

(chorus)
I don't wanna leave you
I don't wanna go
Can't you see I need you
girl,I need you so

(repeat chorus)
All I wanna do
is make sweet love to you
Now you wanna leave me
what am I supposed to do?
Can't you hang past two?
That was 12 O'clock at night
why you wanna leave so soon
girl,you know it ain't right
ah yeah

I don't wanna leave you
I don't wanna go (I don't wanna go)
Can't you see I need you (why you wanna leave me even tonight?)
girl,I need you so (think about it baby, you know it just ain't right)
I don't wanna leave you
I don't wanna go (it ain't right)

Let me try to love you
I know I could
One night to hold you
just ain't no good

I love this song, 7779311 is of course THE song off of that album but this one is very close...I absolutely LOVE this song and its vibe.

I LOVE the Time, but I'm shocked anyone would pick this as one of the best.

IMO, it has nothing particularly "Time-like" about it.

But different strokes etc.

As much as I love this song, you´re quite right, that´s what I´ve been thinking all these years...it ´s a perfect Prince song, something that would´ve fit on his second album or maybe on Controversy, but it doesn´t sound like a typical Time song...it doesn´t have that Time/Morris Day attitude.Great song though.

Sounds a bit too "vulnerable" for a Time song, I always think of Prince laying down his vocals first for this version. wink

My FAVORITE song on the album!!!!! When The Time were here in Seattle last, Me & my friends got to hang out with them after the show. I got to ask Monte Moir WHY they don't do that one LIVE. He just shrugged his shoulders.....what a shame. It's a GREAT song no matter what, and I wish they'd do it live!!!!!

I agree,it definitely sounds more like a Prince song than a Time song and it's a little more subdued than the other tracks on the album, but it has always been my favorite Time song. The piano on this song is just mesmerizing, and the way this song fades out is just incredible (y'all know the part I'm talking about).Seriously, this should have been the fourth single from the album (after "777-933","The Walk" and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too").

True, but there are several Time songs that don't really fit their tough,pimp-styled image ("Girl","Gigolos Get Lonely Too" and "Ice Cream Castles").Those songs are very vulnerable too.

True...but, you know, being occasionally vulnerable is all part of the pimp game. You can´t be a true pimp if you don´t show your vulnerable side from time to time, that´s one of the many aspects of pimpin´. ... wink

Seriously.

I meant more from a musical standpoint, I didn't think it was very Time-like.

The arrangement, the sounds, even the vocals.

I'm glad someone decided to give this song props, because for some reason, it was always my favorite song on the record. And that was a bad record! I mean, the extended jam section to The Walk, for example - amazing. A lot of great songs on this album. But one of the coolest parts of I Dont Wanna Leave You is the fade out - the instrumental groove that's totally different from the song - so cool. And I always thought that section started on some kind of off-beat - meant to be musically complex on purpose. Now I think it was just a less-than-perfect splice by the engineer that spliced that section onto the end of the song. Anyone else notice this?

TO be honest, this song was my least liked on "What Time is IT"- too nice, for a badass-band like The Time. but what can I say, it grew on me..

I go crazy over the fade-out! That part is so cool headbang

That beat almost sounds as if it was swiped from another song.

It's not as "loud" and boisterous as the other tracks (lol),but I think it has the classic Minneapolis Sound of 1982.I'm surprised that another artist hasn't come along and covered or sampled it.This song boasts a HOT groove!

Great song. There's a part towards the end that made me think my album had a skip in it. It wasn't until the CD came out that I knew it was done intentionally.

I thought the same thing....I kinda like the ending, it reminds me of "Nasty Girl".

That ending is unique, isn't it? It kinda sounds like a studio mistake, but I'm sure it was intentional.
