Is Kid Creole a Prince associated artist?

I remember Kid Creole hitting the airwaves about the same time as Prince, and the horns on "Get on the Boat" remind me of some of Kid's music...was there ever a connection between Prince and Kid Creole..?

Yes.Prince gave Kid Creole and The Coconuts a song called "The Sex Of It".They released it as a single in 1987.Prince has been a fan of theirs for awhile, and I think he came up with the Morris Day character from watching Kid Creole.

Does that qualify them as an Official "Prince Associated Artist"(TM)? I'd always thought that an Offical PAA needed a lot more involvement then a single song...

By the way, I've got that on 12" somewhere...

I always thought that Kid Creole was an associated artist of Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band or what ever it was called.. I loved the woman who sang lead in that band I always wondered what happened to her

Try somewhere like here:

Thomas August Darnell Browder

aka: Argyl Knepf
aka: August Darnell
aka: Kid Creole

worked with: Ray Hernandez

aka: Andy Hernandez
aka: Coati Mundi

August's band, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, included a trio of female singers, with lead coconut played by Adriana ("Addy") Kaegi - his wife until their split in 1985.

Was the Prince written song as good as Endicott? I loved that song. "Endicott don't eat piggy feet!" Cheesy cheap video though...

My favorite Kid Creole song is "I'm A Wonderful Thing,Baby",a minor hit for them in the summer of 1982.It's easy to picture Morris Day singing these lyrics.

yeah, I could hear Morris doing that, too. Especially with all that "Take a look at me, I couldn't look no better" business. I think "Stool Pidgeon" sounds like it was the inspiration (vibewise) for The Sex Of It. Dude had a cool style. Prince "borrowed" from Kid as well. Listen to the horn arrangements on Stool Pidgeon and the bass on Endicott and a few others and you can tell Prince vibed off some of this stuff later on.

Mr. Darnell was also behind Machine's disco hit "There But For The Grace of God Go I" in the 70's I believe. So...no he was not a Prince associated artist.

Ottensen

I've never considered him a Prince associated artist, in that he was a singer, writer and producer for 70's disco hitmakers "The Savannah Band"...who can ever forget the beloved 1976 cult hit "Chez Chez La Femme" where they even satirized their (then) manager Tommy Mattola...

"...Tommy Matto-la lives on the ro-oad
he lost his lady two months ago
maybe he'l find he-er,maybe he wo-on't
oh one never kno-ows
..he sits in the back
of his big grey cadillac, oh my honey
blowing his mind on cheap sex and wine..."

I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVED THEM AS A KID!!!! My love affair with Prince's music didn't start til what, like 9 years old I think with "Still Waiting..." They used to play it on the slow jam program at night that I used to sleep to with my little transistor radio. But long before that, I was all about The Savannah Band, Chez Chez La Femme, Sunshower, AALLLL of that. I thought Kid Creole (then known as August Darnell) was supposed to be my boyfriend lol lol lol
