Prince Proteges: More Prince Than Prince? Ok so I have Vanity 6, Vanity's Wild Animal, Apollonia 6 and Andre Cymone all on CD and I hate to say it but I like all of them more than most Prince cds. Does anyone else agree with me or am I crazy?

With the exception of Andre's CD, those other CDs u mentioned sound like Prince albums because they ARE Prince albums. "I'll be the first one to admit that I am many things, but one thing I am not is ungrateful...thank you..." - Prince

Really? Wild Animal was a Prince prodject? What songs? No it wasnt. It was a post-Prince Vanity solo album for Motown. I forget the name of the producer, but I think it was the same guy that produced Shalamar's "Dancing In The Sheets". Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

The protegees that left him in the mid 1980s such as Jesse Johnson, Morris Day, the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions, and the Andre Cymone "AC" album and his productions were much more "Prince" than Prince was. Prince was no longer "Prince" during this era. He was too busy trying to be James Brown and The Beatles. I found it totally appropriate when he changed his name to a symbol in the 1990s because the man making this music since 1985 (which was good music) was not the man I had grown up with whose name was Prince (who had made great music with a sound of his own).

Vanity's 'Wild Animal' album was produced by Bill Wolfer,a popular producer at the time.

. . [Edited 2/21/06 2:40am] I agree, seems like he lost himself for a while there. Any other artists you can think that were/are more Prince than Prince?

Eh, I disagree. I think Prince blows them out of this galaxy, even when they're at their best and he's near his worst. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Well of course Prince is much more talented than them, though I think Andre Cymone comes close in my opinion but the funkiness of the Apollonia 6 blows my mind. I might actually perfer that album to vanity 6. I just love the mix of avant garde and pop. It's genuis. I really like some of his protoge's stuff better than his stuff.

. . [Edited 2/21/06 2:40am] I think you hit the nail on the head.Alot of the guys you have mentioned have come into a style that's their own. Each one brought a mix to that Pasily Park sound so when they went out own thier own they were able to grow musiclly. On a side bar I really think the Beatles were way over rated. When your a musician of a calibar of Prince you surround your self with very talented people. The success of Jam and Lewis is off the chain.Look what they did with Janet Jackson.Don't get me wrong Janet is very talented, but I did not buy a janet album for her alone,Jam and Lewis rocked those albums and brought a Time flavored fun to her sound and they were funky too. These guys from Pasily Park help bring something fresh back to music and it's a treat to listen and watch these people entertain us.
