What was wrong with Sly last night?

If you saw it, you know what I mean. Even CNN mentioned how bad he was. I wanted it to be a triumphant comeback. I hope Prince never gets like that in old age.

They call Prince a 'recluse' sometimes, but Sly really is a proper recluse. I don't think he wants to comeback and probably had to be talked against his will to get that far.

The Sly & The Family Stone tribute was really shambolic. The only thing having so many guest performers did was to show who could sing and who couldn't - so many weak voices, and it looked poorly rehearsed. I read that they weren't sure even upto the last minute whether Sly would show up - and I think it would have been better if he hadn't. It was like the rest didn't know what to do when he was there or when he left. Was he really singing? Was he really playing keyboards? I couldn't tell.

A recluse with a massive attention-grabbing mohawk is surely a paradox?! Going to the effort of turning up, you think he would have made an effort to enjoy it... or at least look up.

Yep, that tribute really managed to kill those great songs, which is a shame because Prince & Larry used to do really very good versions and kept the REAL spirit of The Family Stone alive, which was great music.

When they announced it I knew I did not want to see it.

I will never see my old musical heroes live, don't want it to ruin my memories.

well, if you read some history of Sly Stone and live performances, you'll find that what he did last night was nothing new -- just the fact he showed up is more than we could've hoped of Sly even in the old days

'Tribute' was tired, ragged and AWFUL. I bet Prince & Larry Graham were banging their heads against the wall watching that travesty.

Sly looked terrible, about 20 years older than his 61 years. His keyboard playing was slow and practically inaudible.

His voice seemed okay, but as soon as that started he swaggered/staggered off, leaving the motley crew of assembled 'artists' to try to out-do each other until the dire medley thankfully came to its conclusion.

The entire shambles left me with just one question:

HOW COULD A SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE MEDLEY SOUND FUNK-LESS?

Y'know we all like to ocassionally tease Prince and Larry Graham about their religious asceticism, but Sly was an example of the other extreme -- rampant hedonism apparently isn't good for you either...

It was a trainwreck. I feel for him.

i got a new opinion on this: either he did it on purpose or got stage fright cuz on one of the other threads someone posted an article and part of that article said that during rehersal his voice was crisp and clear
Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...
...And i'm gonna be groovy in it!

I watched the performance again. It appears that Sly didn't want to be out there for whatever reason. I hope to one day see Sly come back and perform like he did on those old tapes that VH1 shows sometimes with Sly singing and dancing with reckless abandon. But I will accept the fact that he's 61 years old and has burned his body out with drugs.

Jim Morrison was The Lizard King.

Sly is The Iguana King.

i was shocked to see him even get out on stage with out the assistance of a cane. The way folks have talked about him lately i assumed that he was like Richare Pryor before he passed away (Rest in Peace, bruh). But i don't understand why the crazy look? Why have him looked like an iguana from another planet?

Bootsy glasses and a wig would have done the trick. I don't know...

He looked like he was 90.

Just saw it. The poor guy looked lost...and where's his neck? Still, when you could hear his voice, it's obvious that he's still fonkee...

Ciara was woeful. Great legs, though...

All in all, atrocious. It would have been much better without all the additional over-singing "stars".

I saw little bits of it and I was some what at a loss.Sly is one of funk's earliest innovators and showman. This night was not one of his best moments. Those other clowns that were up there tring to do a tribute did nothing other than make themselves look and sound bad.Sly has had his heyday and to a great degree he was the reason for his star fading. But that music is timeless. For those who ever saw Sly at his best he was a monster performer, and the Family Stone was like a runnaway frieght train.Try watching Sly at woodstock doing HIGHER.That band was so tight and he just carried the crowd.Let's try not to remember him at his worst, the tirbute was all about him at his best even tho on this night he was far from it.

I still have tickets to a concert that was supposed to be in chicago for sly and the family stone 1975. Sly didn't ever show up the rest of the band did about 6 times and there wasn't ever a show. Just Sly doing his rockstar noshow routine so Maybe his showing up for the grammys was a sort of I am sorry to the many fans that never got to see him in concert. Smile!!!
Better late then NEVER!!! THE MOhAWK LOOKED GOOD THOUGH.
sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time.
