SHEILA E LIVE IN ROMANCE 1600

Anyone seen this? Is it good - is a Prince concert featuring Sheila E songs? I've seen it and am not sure whether to buy it/what it is....

It's a Sheila E concert...Prince comes onstage at the end, and they do an extra-long version of "A Love Bizarre"...

I used to rent it but I don't own it. It's not too hard to get on used VHS.

It's sorta a difficult performance to watch. Shelia and her band are obviously really talented, but they seem like they are trying too hard. They unecesarily speed up the tempo on Merci for the Speed of a Mad Clown in Summer, Shelia does some self humilating thing with mechanical toy puppies during Toy Box, there's a bit of breakdancing by her keyboard players, who are in turn dressed in the the trashiest Purple Rain style gear.

I always refer to this tape as Shelia E. and the Jeri-Curl misfits, cause that's what the vibe is like. The Jeri Curl misfits come out and do their thing and then Prince and the Revolution come out do Love Bizarre with them, amping up the energy and generally blowing them off the stage.

You read way too deeply into things, especially when reviewing in retrospect. It was the 80s. EVERYBODY had Jheri curls. Sheila didn't get blown off the stage. That's just silly. Stop drinking while you watch concert tapes. lol

Blow them off the stage? Naw, I'd just say he brought the energy up even more (It is Prince after all). Mind you that Sheila was supposed to be a supporting act for his tour. After he saw how they performed live, he decided to give her her own tour. Then he worked the Revolution even harder after watching them. Sheila worked them hard and it paid off.

That was a dope concert.

while I like the show for the most part,I always find myself laughing at parts that aren't supposed to be funny. The show is kinda tacky,in a mid-80s sort of way lol

Tacky perhaps and on par with most groups in the 80s, but how many groups in the 80s were able to groove like that. The groove they held down on 'Sister Fate' alone makes it all worth it.

Definitely get it. unless it's going to come out on DVD (we can wish!).

Yes there are few tacky parts, well really just one.... the intro to Toy Box where Sheila talks in babytalk and puts on pajamas. her brother Juan comes out of the toy box dressed in the same ones.

Whoever said her keybaord players were breakdancing must've been on drugs, cuz neither Susie Davis nor Ken Grey who were on keys---let alone anyone else--breakdanced. Maybe you're thinking of when Juan did the robot for a second. He was supposed to be a "toy soldier" in that skit.

Anyway, despite the little skit, they break into an AMAZING version of Toy Box. Sheila is basically banging the shit out of her cymbal and chewing gum while leading the band. She gets all "Morris-Day" like at the end while they bring her furs and stuff..... like she does on the record.

Other than that.... the shit is TIGHT!!! Her version of Erotic City is really cool..... especially the choreagrpahy during hte vamping at the end.

When P and the Revolution cmoe out for Love Bizarre..... they do take it to another level, but c'mon... we're talking about the Expanded Revolution with Miko, Eric alongside W&L, Fink and Mark..... plus Sheila's band!!!

That night was the debut of the what should've been the original version of Live Bizarre with all the horn lines and "new part" etc.

I still never knew what Prince says during one of the "stop on the 1"... something like:

"I ain't got know business up here...she just WRECKED the stage"

I never knew if he was trying to give Sheila a compliment or say his band is better.

That was a very good show especially back in the 80s. I do beleive this is the famous show that Sheila E. forgot the word s to Love BIzarre that's why Prince took over the stage.

WHATCHOO TALKIN' BOUT D'ARTIST??? smile

Sheila doesn't forgot the words..... P and the Rev took the stage before the song even begins. He's basically doing lead vocals while Sheila back him up and mimics his stage antics onstage.

falloff Oh lawd. I laughed for five minutes at the "jeri-curl misfits" phrase. That's my new buzz word.

talk to the hand

i can sum up that whole show with one song:

MERCI FOR THE SPEED OF A MAD CLOWN IN SUMMER!omg clapping

performed at break-neck speed.....ripped off the hinges.disbelief

heck, the timbale intro ALONE...can't mess with that.

if there's a tribute to Sheila E. concert that's the song i would LOVE to play drums on.
