MY FIRST{and prolly last} WENDY n LISA thread {question}

something seems to be missing out of the puzzle.

according to the per nielson book, WENDY AND LISA told prince they wanted to quit after the PARADE TOUR and go solo.....or somethin to that effect.

The a year later they were on MTV saying they were fired.

am i missing something? eek

sounds like they were grandstanding to get more but what they got was the boot.

kinda like when you go to your boss and say, I'm giving my two weeks notice, but what you are really trying to do is get a raise, but all your boss does is look at you and say "okay!".
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Anx

i thought wendy and lisa started talking about branching off to do their own thing, but prince asked them to stay on at least to promote and tour 'parade', and at the end of the tour he sprung the whole disbanding of the revolution without warning. do i have this wrong?

Actually yes. There were a series of spats between Prince & W&L (some of which involved Susannah and some that were band related) and W&L told Prince they wanted out of the band right before the Parade tour. Prince didn't want to tank the tour and convinced them to stay. He then let them go after the tour was over. The way the story was told they made it seem like they were fired out of the blue. But by all accounts everyone in the band knew that there would be some big shake up with the band after that tour.

It's my understanding that W&L intended to quit the band, period, back in early '86. From the reports, it seems like they really wanted to contribute more, artistically, but would never have room for growth with Prince (as he ultimately called all the shots) and due to Prince's controlling nature would not let them work with other artists, either. On top of that, they were unhappy with the expanded Revolution and Wendy had problems with Susannah being around and involved so deeply.

At one point W&L actually made it as far as the airport with bags packed and Prince dispatched Bobby Z to go and beg them to come back. IIRC, Alan Leeds then negotiated with them to stay on.

After the Parade tour was over, Prince invited them up to his house and sacked them, then called Bobby Z while they were still there and sacked him, too, saying he was disbanding the Revolution.

I think the key point of confusion here is that several band members, including W&L, seem surprised at the final outcome despite the fact they had wanted to leave to begin with...

This makes me curious as to exactly what the negotiations involved. My complete guess is that during the negotiations W&L were promised more $$$ and more input into future recording projects. Two pieces of evidence that lead me in this direction are: a) The Rolling Stone interview from '86 where Wendy mentions that W&L are writing a lot more for a future project and that the Revolution was a band that would be together for a long time. b) The Dream Factory era included quite a bit of W&L involvement and that album was being worked on at least as late as July '86. The firing of W&L would happen less than two months after the final configuration of the album was completed. It does seem odd, if they had been expecting to still be fired, that the album project would have continued with them up to such a late date. One would have expected Prince to start planning a solo project back in April if W&L were just hanging around for the Parade tour.

Except, in this case, it was more like you go to your boss and say you're leaving, and then pack up your crap and go home. At which point your boss comes running after you and begs you to stay (just so he can turn around and fire you a week later).

lol
