WE WORKED WITH PRINCE and Robin Powers - thread participants

Started this thread as you (or at least I) can no longer post to the original thread.

I had a nice talk with bassdame the other day and she asked me to give everyone her regards.
She's working on some things and wanted everyone to know she'll be back posting soon.

Hey - whazzup y'all?

Sorry it's been a while. I got distracted by other parts of life (a good thing). Now I'm back to working on the film. I'll try to get the trailer going asap.

Bassdame and Uptown Dame are pulled in different directions as well. Now you know why it's hard to reunite the Dames. We have different lives in different parts of the country, and there is more to life than being in a band etc.

Krystal, I'm gonna have to find a photo of Thelma.

Later!

It took me nearly 24 hours, but I finally got through all four threads and... WOW... take away the identity crisis bits, the bedroom stuff, and the 'girl talk' , and there is a lot of very interesting tidbits scattered through out the four posts. I really hope the Dames continue to post. I especially liked artpal's story about just jamming with Prince, would love to hear bassdame and Uptown Dame's take on that incident - having the different perspectives on the same situation is most intriguing. Oh, and the pictures, truly beautiful, especially the three 'proof' shots...

Though I am about as far from being a musician as it's possible to get and still know how to spell the word, I also find the techy talk interesting. There is one aspect of musical tech that I do understand, and that is, do any of you use computers in your workflow? If so, what kind? Amiga's or Atari ST's? (well, you've been around long enough... lol )

I'll have to head over to the hq and see if there is any additional info...

You know over at Housquake I watched that Women love Prince-Joan Rivers show again...and it really seemed there was some tension among Robin Power and Diamond/Pearl.

I wouldn't say tension so much as difference. Diamond & Pearl were having little side conversations giggling most of the show and Robin seemed a bit disinterested in what was going on with them. It was more like people who run in different social circles. Diamond & Pearl probably didn't hang out with Robin in the off hours, I'd guess. Plus, Joan asked the MJ question and directed it towards D & P saying they should know better than anyone when Robin clearly stated earlier on that she was closer to Prince and D&P had both said their relationship with Prince was a working one rather than a social one (I'm paraphrasing of course). Robin didn't seem to like that Joan did that so she stepped in and answered it. I saw that as more of a tension with Joan. That's a common social quip that a lot of people of color have to deal with regularly; people excluding you or assuming someone knows else more about something or in this case someone.

Oh really? Thanks for your imput. I think Robin had it alot harder than the other Prince girls. Sadly I think it might have been due part to her race. Maybe Prince thought white women were eaiser to sell? To me Robin was a knockout but unfortantly alot of people see her as a sexy black woman. When she was just as sexy as Diamond, Pearl or Carmen Electra. Oh well thankfuly things are starting to be different than they were in 1991. Prince should be grateful that he has fans as devoted as Robin who are willing to defend and accept him as if they were his kin.

I think Robin Power is great. A strong, intelligent woman who lived by her wits. wink

I think Blaque is right. They were just in different circles. D&P were very new to the scene compared to Robin, so Robin had to jump in when they couldn't answer. I didn't sense any tension between Robin and D&P at all when I was there. If anything, there was tension between Robin and Sheila E.

I sure do wish Bassdame and Uptown Dame would post too, but what can I do?

What the fuck?!? How do you draw this conclusion? Everytime someone reads race into a situation when there is zero evidence, it just diminishes the times when there are valid complaints. That's one major reason that when someone like Al Sharpton raises even a valid issue, it carries little credibility with the general public. And no, I'm not white.

and that was the saddest interview ever. how do you find that to be a credible depiction of reality? Robin obviously was self-inflating. come on now.. things aren't what they seem....

Hmmm....thanks artpal! That makes alot of sense. Considering they both seemed to be "I know Prince best!" and "NO I do!" razz They both definatly gave off that vibe.

I don't really care what you are as far as race is concerned. Its funny how people go to such great extents to be politically correct that they refuse to see even the slightest social ineptitude. Its institutionalized bias, by the way. Not racism per se. Also, its not the first time Joan Rivers is guilty of it.
I came to that conclusion from HER REACTION. Go back and watch it and maybe you'll get it. Joan went to Diamond and Pearl and said that they obviously knew Prince better than anyone. Then proceeded to ask the MJ question. Robin interjected and answered after they said they'd never heard him mention MJ. The conclusion was more of a simple judging of the reactions rather than reading more into something. She had already stated how close she and Prince were and D&P had already said how their relationship with Prince was a working one but Joan still went to them...fuck it. I see you conviently chopped my post up and went on your rant. If anything YOU read more into what I said than me reading more into what was said on the interview. If you have beef with me, pick a better post than this one, please. For what its worth, I'm sure Susannah would have reacted the same way if it had been her and D & P on the stage and Joan had done that to her. Thank you Krystal and Artpal for your responses. Al Sharpton rolleyes whateva, fool.
