I just got a copy of Mazarati's version of "Jerk Out", now who did it first, them or The Time?

The Time did it first around 83-84 for Ice Cream Castles. They later rerecorded it for Pandemoniam and it became their biggest hit, their only top 10 pop (#9) and only chart topping r&b single.

interesting fact: Mazarati recorded "Jerkout" in 1985 for possible inclusion on their debut album,but they didn't really like it.Lead singer Terry Casey had a problem with some of the lyrics.I think the song originally featured lyrics about an interracial romance,and Terry was uncomfortable singing it.

I liked the first album, they were so underrated.

I've been jamming to this version that sounds like Prince and Morris. It's just fucking TASTY! I love love love love it. Way bettter thatn the released Time version.

Prince's involvement in the Mazarati album was fairly limited. Most of the album was recorded simultaneously with Parade at Sunset Sound, Prince working in one studio and Mazarati working with Brown Mark and David Rivkin in another. So Prince did overlook the recording process, but it was mainly Brown Mark's project. Prince gave the group two songs for the album, "Jerk Out" and "100 M.P.H." The former was rejected, and asked to come up with another song, Prince quickly recorded a simple demo of "Kiss," which featured him singing accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. David Rivkin then developed the demo into a brilliant, funky track. When Prince heard what he had accomplished, he decided to reclaim the song - it was too good for Mazarati!

KMOJ radio here in MPLS once played a song off the album. It was a remake of an old Ray Parker Jr. song called "A Woman Needs Love" I thought it SUCKED.

There was no such track on the 2nd album. It's OK (Brown Mark produced half of it) but not a patch on the first album.

The question I have always had was when exactly was Morris's vocal recorded? In 1983 for the demo or in 1989 for the released version. Anyone know?

I'm pretty sure that Morris' vocals recorded in 1989. I don't know the original lyrics of the 1st version, but there's a difference (update) between Mazaratis' and Morris' recording of that song. These changes took place in the production process of "Pandemonium" after Warner Bros. stops "Corporate World" and the band picks this track from the purple vault.

Is it just me or does the mazarati version sound like MC Hammer on lead vocals on the first two verses.

I have everything by Mazarati, including the 2nd CD. I liked the 1st one much better. I remember buying everything on paisley park records on cassette for my walkman. i still have the 2nd CD in my collection.

Prince's version #1 was from Dec '81.
Mazarati's version #2 was from Apr/May 1985
Morris' version #3 was from Oct-Dec 1989

Version #1 was intended for the album "What time is it?", but finally it was not choosen. There isn't any #1.b version with a voice over by Morris - it's 100% Prince only.
Version #2 was re-recorded with Mazarati on lead vocals, but this version wasn't released too.
Version #3 based on Version #2 (not Version #1). If you listen closely you can year Mazaratis voice in the background - the full voice track is still intact.

I've never heared anything about an "unknown" fourth version with Morris on lead vocals.
