Mazarati-Jerk Out

I just got a copy of Mazarati's version of "Jerk Out", now who did it first, them or The Time?

The Time did it first around 83-84 for Ice Cream Castles. They later rerecorded it for Pandemoniam and it became their biggest hit, their only top 10 pop (#9) and only chart topping r&b single.

interesting fact: Mazarati recorded "Jerkout" in 1985 for possible inclusion on their debut album, but they didn't really like it.Lead singer Terry Casey had a problem with some of the lyrics.I think the song originally featured lyrics about an interracial romance, and Terry was uncomfortable singing it.

Yes, the lyrics in the Mazarati version are a little angry. It sounds almost like "Ice Cream Castles" part 2 to me.

hey Mazarati, if you hadn't been so stupid so many years ago, by rejecting kiss and jerk out, you might still be around.
although i did like your first album - sorry your only album.

They did not reject Kiss. They recorded the version Prince had a hit with, when Prince just bluntly stole it back.

Jerk out #1 (lead vocals by Prince)
originally recorded December 1981 by Prince at his home-studio during the "What Time Is It?" album sessions * performed by Prince (all instruments & vocals) * written by Prince * previously unreleased

Jerk out #2 (lead vocals by Mazarati) (7:07)
reworked April/May 1985 by Prince with Mazarati at Sunset Sound during the "Mazarati" Album sessions * performed by Prince (all instruments) with Sir Casey Terry (lead & background vocals) * written by Prince * previously unreleased (but circulating on bootlegs)
Lyrics: http://www.purplemusic.my...ml#jerkout

Jerk out #3 (lead vocals by Morris Day) (6:49)
reworked October-December 1989 by THE TIME at Paisley Park * performed by Morris Day (lead vocals), Jesse Johnson (guitar), Terry Lewis (bass), Jellybean Johnson (drums), Jerome Benton (percussion), Jimmy Jam & Monte Moir (both keyboards) and Sir Casey Terry (background vocals) * written by Prince (uncredited) * registered to Prince with Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis * finally released 1990 on the Album "Pandemonium"
Lyrics: http://www.purplemusic.my...ml#jerkout

Prince's involvement in the Mazarati album was fairly limited. Most of the album was recorded simultaneously with Parade at Sunset Sound, Prince working in one studio and Mazarati working with Brown Mark and David Rivkin in another. So Prince did overlook the recording process, but it was mainly Brown Mark's project. Prince gave the group two songs for the album, "Jerk Out" and "100 M.P.H." The former was rejected, and asked to come up with another song, Prince quickly recorded a simple demo of "Kiss," which featured him singing accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. David Rivkin then developed the demo into a brilliant, funky track. When Prince heard what he had accomplished, he decided to reclaim the song - it was too good for Mazarati!

Y'know...I've got this version...it's Morris on lead vocal and princ edoing back ground. Morris is doing an almost rap type delivery...It COULD be Prince, but it sure the hell doesn't sound like him.

KMOJ radio here in MPLS once played a song off the album. It was a remake of an old Ray Parker Jr. song called "A Woman Needs Love" I thought it SUCKED.

There was no such track on the 2nd album. It's OK (Brown Mark produced half of it) but not a patch on the first album.

The question I have always had was when exactly was Morris's vocal recorded? In 1983 for the demo or in 1989 for the released version. Anyone know?

I'm pretty sure that Morris' vocals recorded in 1989. I don't know the original lyrics of the 1st version, but there's a difference (update) between Mazaratis' and Morris' recording of that song. These changes took place in the production process of "Pandemonium" after Warner Bros. stops "Corporate World" and the band picks this track from the purple vault.

Can I interject something here...???
Prince had enough material to fill at least 6 to 7 albums when he signed
with WB some stuff made it on his albums.
And some went on albums of friends that were screaming
Don't forget about us man?
whoever made it first was supposed to come back
for the rest of the hoodlums.
To bad money would make them all stab each other

Oh to answer the question
Morris's vocals were recorded long before 1983...
sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time.

Do you "think" or do you know for sure?

Prince's version #1 was from Dec '81.
Mazarati's version #2 was from Apr/May 1985
Morris' version #3 was from Oct-Dec 1989

Version #1 was intended for the album "What time is it?", but finally it was not choosen. There isn't any #1.b version with a voice over by Morris - it's 100% Prince only.
Version #2 was re-recorded with Mazarati on lead vocals, but this version wasn't released too.
Version #3 based on Version #2 (not Version #1). If you listen closely you can year Mazaratis voice in the background - the full voice track is still intact.

I've never heared anything about an "unknown" fourth version with Morris on lead vocals.
