Rosario Dawson Even though her singing (not to mention the movie itself) was panned by the critics in the big screen release of "Rent," I was impressed by her vocals. She's not Christina Aguilera but she doesn't try to be. Does anyone ever wonder why Prince didn't give her a more central vocal part in his recording of 1999 The New Master? I mean, she could have been Jill to Rosie Gaines' Lisa. I would have enjoyed that more than all the theological and racial mumbo-jumbo Rosario was prattling on about.

Rosario is a very talented actress, but she can't sing for shit or toffee. Mind you, according to Mr Leeds's interview on here, that wouldn't have stopped Prince signing her to Paisley Part and producing her album. Rosario is wonderful eye candy. She's a decent actress and she did better than I expected her to in Rent. The real question is "Do you think she would make more money making movies or singing in Prince's little camp? The woman is if nothing else, self-aware." She's trying to poise herself to be the next "it girl". Her competition - Eva Mendes. She's not going to make any career-ruining moves (like releasing a CD) unless it was going to be JLo-esque; laced with top producers, prime earning potential and full target market saturation. She's 26, not 46 so Prince's core audience is of less use to her than say - Andre 3000's audience (who also used her on his CD). There's pressure for pop icon wannabes to be a "triple threat" (acting, singing, modeling). Rosario's probably testing the waters to see what she can get away with and trying to keep a little balance in her career. She's already modeled and its obvious her main thing is acting. Releasing a CD too soon could mess her chances at "it girl" status up if its not a guarenteed seller. People have to be into her enough to buy her CD just because she's Rosario Dawson. Everybody's after that $20Mil-a-flick Julia Roberts price tag and the only way to get there is acheiving it girl status. Showbiz is a sreious game to those playing it.
(Watch, now that I've said this next week she'll announce she's going to release a CD)
