Prince, Jesse Johnson, and shockadelica. Is the song truly about Jesse? I have often heard that Jesse had some serious drug habits. Any truth to any of this?

Prince came up with the song and wanted Jesse to record it and he was like fuck you my album is done so Prince put it out to make it look like jesse took the title form him when in fact Prince took the title from Jesse and then wrote the song. Great Prince song, great Jesse album

Noooo. Jesse recorded the album, titled Shockadelica, a title Prince liked. To 'tease' Jesse, Prince recorded the song and put it out there on radiostations. It pissed Jesse off BIG TIME, cuz now it looked he stole the title from Prince, while it was the other way around. Prince likes teasing Jesse; remember Wendy & Lisa's Satisfaction, co-written with Jesse? Just before Jesse starts singing, 3:31 into the song, Prince says teasingly; "How about it, Jesse?" then laughs that mean laugh of his...

I thought the only involvement he had with the songs on that album was a remix of Lolly Lolly. Info please..... ~And even when I'm right, I'll be wrong...it's Automatic too.

He is not credited, of course, but I have listened to his voice long enough to be able to spot his voice. 3:31 into the album version of Satisfaction Prince says "How 'bout it, Jesse?" and then laughs. Go listen. I thought this was common knowledge. PS EDIT. And that is his only involvement on the album. [Edited 12/19/05 2:50am]

Awww, now I am playing Fruit At The Bottom (cuz I had to give the correct timing for Prince's tease)...
What a wonderful album! Wendy & Lisa are artists of which I like everything they ever released...

Jesse told P the name of his album and P wanted to hear the title track and Jesse said "There isn't one" and P was like? "Huh? How you gonna have a title that good and no title cut?" So P decided to to fuck around with Jesse and commenced to record "Shockadelica", kinda in a tongue-in-cheek mess with Jesse for not having a title cut. How do you know this? It is true.I remember a 1986 interview with Jesse Johnson in Rock and Soul magazine. He was pissed that Prince came out with a song called "Shockadelica"... He's a bigger artist than I am.If he put it out,it would look like I was stealing his thing, and I don't want people to think that But Prince had a good point. How are you gonna come up with a brilliant title like "Shockadelica" for your album, but not include a title track? That's absurd.Surely,Jesse could have written a kickass jam with that title.

I don't think he fancied the idea of the title track to his album being the one song written by Prince, when he was trying to move out of Prince's shadow.

Do YOU think that is Wendy's voice? She sounds awfully masculine there, if it IS her, even for a lesbian. I heard it the first time and recognised Prince's voice immediately. I never questioned it or had it questioned until now. Prince WAS still kind of friendly with W&L, as he did a remix for one of the songs on that album, so at some point I guess he was in the studio. Knowing his en Jesse's rivalry, it would be a PERFECT Prince thing to do. It is HIS voice and HIS laugh. I heard his voice too often and am too atuned to it not to recognise it. Hehehe. This is the first time I dare to go up against Boris. Sorry, mate, won't be swayed. Let's just say I believe it's Prince and you believe it's Wendy & Jesse. We let any of the people that KNOW Wendy ask her next time they see her, deal?

Y'all are tripping!
"How about it Jesse?" is so clearly Wendy and a woman..... if you think that's Prince's voice..... that's basically saying he sounds like a woman. The laugh COULD be Prince, but it's most likely Jesse, since they asically laugh similarly, and it would make sense that it's Jesse since he's on the album. Unless htis is another one of those dumb threads that tries to pull people's legs.

That is SO Wendy speaking that line and it's Jesse laughing afterwards.

We'll ask Wendy.
If she says, yeah, that's me, then I will believe it. LoL@ Prince 'basically sounding like a woman'. He was never accused of butch vocalisations. I must admit, I am doubting myself now. When taking the vocals apart.... Oh well.

Jesse recorded the album and called it 'Shockadelica'. Prince told him that with such a great title, he ought to have a title track. Jesse said the album was done, and didn't intend to record a title track. Prince went away and recorded the track 'Shockadelica'. Prince offered it to Jesse for his album. Jesse turned it down (as the album was done, and he didn't want to have a Prince penned title track. He wanted the album to be all him, to show that he was more than just another 'Prince protege'). Prince put it out himself, partly to piss off Jesse for not using it. Jesse is pissed off as it makes it look like he stole the title from Prince when it actually the other way round. Prince's "one-upmanship" can really piss other people off (like this incident) but it does often drive him to produce some great music. Cuz if he hadn't recorded 'Shockadelica' he would never have carried on to record the other 'Camille' tracks, and by default, created the Sign O' The Times album.

i so wanted to like Jesse , bought that "Best of" album of his.....
and .....not a big jesse fan, sounds so dated and amatuerish, kinda like Prince's recent stuff. Prince's Shockadelica would have been know as the best song Jesse ever recorded, lol [Edited 12/23/05 19:23pm]
