Maceo Parker and Prince. The hook up? Maceo Parker and Prince, anybody know how and why Prince chose Maceo Parker as one of his leading horn players? I know Prince was inspired by James Brown. And another thing; Do you think Maceo Parker's history and involvement with JB has anything to do with it, Maceo being a true legend and all, or is it Maceo's musician talent that brought them two together?
We all know Prince loves the company of legends. I bet it would be interesting conversation, these two, Prince and Maceo Parker in a room

Prince probably liked the sound and style that Maceo brought to the Band. The James Brown influence was probably also factor for the Soul Man sound.
Just like the special 'house dressing' at a restaurant, Maceo adds that special and unique flavor to Prince's band when he's in the house.

It's just a natural progression. First Maceo played with James Brown, than in the 70's and 80's he was hornplayer and musical director for George Clinton. And now he moves on to a funkateer in the next generation, Prince. Btw, Maceo is a guest player on hundreds of other cd's, ranging from Deelite to Larry Goldings, so evereybody wants him to blow.
Most of Prince's hornplayers were Maceo fans/soundalikes, remember Eddie M., Candy D. and even Eric Leeds (who himself played with the godfather). So it was logical that Prince ultimately wanted the real thing! jazzz

According to some written sources, Eric Leeds played some concerts with James Brown. Must have been in the late 70's or early 80's. Eric probably got the gig with the help from his brother Alan, who was Brown's road manager at the time.
To my best knowledge, no studio or live recordings are available from the cooperation. jazzz.
