My advice is to buy a cd by a better group but I'm sure there are orgers who will kill me for that statement. I personally think they are boring.

I really like both kinds, so it really makes no difference.

Eroica is the best of both worlds...if you like soul/pop w/ a twist of funk get Fruit At The Bottom. If you dig alt-rock try girlbros. But Eroica is the best of both worlds all in one. Not my fav but the best representation of the girls diversity.

I would recommend starting with their 1st album: Wendy & Lisa. It's not as funky but it really has those "colors" you always hear about W&L's music having.

Plus it has probably one of their best IMO songs: This is The Life.

Then move on to Fruit at The Bottom..... then Eroica etc.

That way you experience their growth and journey as it happened.

I have all 3 but for some reason I never really got into Eroica..... I don't know why though....

Still never got around to getting GirlBros.

And to LoveMachine: Of course you're entitled to your opinions, as we all are.

But when someone says "which W&L album should i buy?" and the reply is get another artist's, that's being provocative and baiting with your opionion. He didn't ask "should I buy one" he already made the decision and wanted to know which one.

That's a great record--very stripped down. And as I'm sure you've heard, very personal lyrically. After Jonathan's death, it was an album that W&L needed to get out of their system.

Lovemachine can stuff a sock in it. I think Johnny Depp is stupid.

I would recommend Their last CD from 1998 "Girl Bros." as a good place to start. All of their CD's are very different from one another. They NOT boring. They ARE sophisticated in style and substance. They definately have a singer/songwriter vibe to their music which I'm sure kids and those who digest a steady diet of rap and hip/hop would call "boring". Wendy & Lisa's music is considered alternative.
1. WENDY & LISA (1987): Jazzy/psychidellic/dance-pop
2. FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM (1989): Country-funk, pop/rock, dance-pop.
3. Eroica (1990): Singer/Songwriter, alternative, acoustic rock.
4. Remix-In-Carnation (1991): Alternative Dance Pop
5. Girl Bros. (1998): Singer/songwriter, alt-rock.

I like both recoreded versions of "The Life" but I think I prefer the newer version on the DANGEROUS MINDS Soundtrack the better.

On EROICA:

Layering fluid guitar lines and humming organ chrods over synthesized melodies and sly rhythms, they create a beguiling groove that rolls with the understated sexiness and smooth assurance of african pop. This is how a better informed Indigo Girls might sound. These two women are masters of musical production and they sing with carefree, understated longing. This is a striking record: complex, varied, intensely personal, and hard to classify in any pop genre (even if a slithery kind of funk is never far from the surface).

I HATE country and I like Fruit At The Bototm. I dont' even know why someone called it country-funk....

It's the most "Prince" sounding album they did.

Wendy called it "country funk" on Soul Train.

Girlbros. has grown into my favorite of theirs. And like most of my favorite albums, I had a hard time getting into it. Now, it's the W&L album that is most consistently in my playlist.

Lyrically, it registers on so many different levels. "Would you r.e.m. with me?" a line from "Let's Say" is one of my all time favorites. The idea of "can you sleep comfortably at my side?" is so simple and so beautiful.

Then:
Eroica
Wendy&Lisa
Fruit at the Bottom
And "re-mix-in-..." is a lot of fun as well.

And honestly, like a lot of Prince albums, whatever I'm listening is my favorite in that moment!

its stricking how each of them have dealt with their brother's death. one needed to express what they felt to the world to find peace..the other needed to find themselves to find peace. i think their actions personify their musical genius.

such a tragic coincedence for the duo.....im glad they both have seen the light at the end of the tunnel and are living their lives in honor of their brothers.....
