To answer your question: NO, Prince was not "racist" towards Brownmark. He was biased, though. Its been pretty clear that Prince likes to constantly remain the focus of attention when it comes to males in his camp. Black guys in Prince's band have always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to image and attention. He probably has some internal issues about his own blackness considering the things he's done to try to "blur the lines" when it comes to his race.

I think Levi is an exception to the statement about "black guys getting the short end of the stick", he was his right hand man on stage and in the studio for a few years.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

And wasn't it Levi who sued over money?
Prince has never been much for other guys in his circle. He wants to be the only rooster in the henhouse.

U know, I thought it was just my perception for all those years. But, obviously it wasn't because U guys seem to think that P was kinda racist towards Brown Mark too! I use to wonder why he never had any lines in "Purple Rain" and why in most of the Revolution's videos, his camera shots were few and far between.
Hmmm! I guess Prince had no luv for a brotha sad !

It has nothing to do with RACE, the whole topic of that is ignorant. Maybe he just didn't think he needed to be up front with solos or whatever. Mark and Wendy had their moment on the Purple Rain tour where they would go up on the amps during the Yankee Doodle Dandy segue. He let Miko and Levi talk during Graffiti Bridge and look how well that went. lol

Sorry, but I hate 2 inform U that even though it's 2006, Race is still a factor in our society. It doesn't matter if we're talking about Prince, Brown Mark or Jack and Jill ( wink ) from down the street-Just as long as we can talk about the subject maturely and without hostility. Still appreciate U though cool .

I am very aware that race is still a factor in society today. But was it the reason that Prince treated Brownmark the way he did????? No. That was and IS my point.

How do U know? Did U ask Prince? If so, then that's a whole other issue. His view of why he treated Brown Mark this way, will determine whether you made your point! Luv ya though wink . Obviously, we can't talk about race without hostility rearing it's ugly head. Very sad.

You're actually saying that Prince, a black man, treated Brownmark which ever way because he's RACIST against blacks??? Read that out loud and you'll see it's not hostility rearing it's ugly head, looks more like stupidity. Which like you said is VERY sad.

I'm far from being stupid! If U knew anything about the history of racism among black people themselves, then you wouldn't say something like this. I can say it because I am black and educated behind it. There is a history of black people hating each other for their skin color. You obviously don't know that or maybe your just too ignorant to appreciate anyone's opinion except your own. Anyway, it has been interesting talking to you though!

Of course people can be prejudiced against their own kind... unfortunately. Sometimes it's called "internalized" oppression "self-hating" etc. It's complex but it happens.

I think there is even a kind of psychological phenomenon that describes how an oppresed person will often take on the behaviors of his/her oppressor and do the same things to others.

Anyway... back to the topic.

Of course we'll never know what P was thinking or his motiations, but I think someone was trying to point out above, the perhaps (I say PERHAPS) his treatment of Brownmark was not motivated by race, because in a sense, he treated all the guys in the band similarly, inlcuding those were are white.

E.g. I don't think Bobby Z had a line in Purple Rain either (if he did I forgot it).

The only guys he ever realy showcased were Dr. Fink (and only early on for synth solos like on Head), Eric Leeds (hard not to give the sax player a spotlight), and Levi (who is Black).

Just my 2 cents
