I'll give you the T.C. Ellis rap at the end of 'Graffiti Bridge', but that's still four years removed from the 'flop' that was 'Parade'.

Cat's rap on 'Lovesexy' is similar to Sheila E's rap on 'Sign O The Times' in that it is not hip-hop inspired in any way. The very same year he dissed rap on "Dead On It" so Prince hadn't thrown in the towel yet at that point.

4 years is enough time to see that Rap was not going anyplace.
Cat's rap was inspired by Hip-Hop. You did not hear anything like that on P's CD before 88. Lovesexy is two years away from Parade.

Sheila's rap on "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" was before 'Lovesexy'.

Again, I ask if Prince had changed his mind about rap in 1988 then why record "Dead On It"?

That is not a rap. That Sheila reading a poem and I think it was done to cover up the cussing on "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night"

We don't know how old that song was and I think he liked taking a piss at the rappers who are not above being critized.

It says in the 'Sign O The Times' album notes that it's a 'transmississippi-rap'. If Prince calls it a rap then I call it a rap.

'The Vault' says both "Dead On It" and "Alphabet St." were recorded during the 1987-88 sessions.

There was also this black and white duo in the 80's called the System. They had the song, "You Are In My System." They even had the black vocalist in a video riding a motorcycle very similar to the one Prince had in Purple Rain.

You're referring to The System's 1985 video "Pleasure Seekers".That video is such an embarassing Prince rip-off! The lead singer (Mic Murphy) is riding around town on a motorcycle, with big hair covering one side of his face (lol). This video is unintentionally hilarious.

I disagree - The System was a very originial band. They were doing the electro soul sound in 1983 when the only other artist that was close was Prince. They had their own hits prior to Prince blowing up in 84

Remember Rick James video for "Glow"? If that wasn't a blatant rip-off from "Purple Rain" I don't know what is. From the ruffled shirts even to the part where he rushes to the main floor to get his girl back, like Prince did Appolonia at the end of the movie.

I love this video and I have always said the same thing about it. Rick was not even ashamed to rip off Prince. Even has the white guitar and the argument scene with the manager back stage just like the Kid and Billy Sparks!!

Yes, but he wasnt talented enough or pretty enough to pull it off completely. I remember seeing him in an episode of A Team where he was supposed to be entertaining some inmates. I remember thinking that he would never go into a prison in real life because he knew he was too feminine not to get fugged. I think Rick James and Isaac Hayes were in this same episode as well!

I guess you're right. Madonna was like an amalgamation of Prince and Michael which resulted in her own "originality." She obviously took Prince's sex appeal. But musically, she had perhaps more in common with MJ. Portions of Like A Virgin sound like Billie Jean..the bass line especially. Then her Material Girl sounded similar to the Jackson's Can You Feel It?

hmmm I always thought Madonna was more influenced by Debbie Harry of Blondie

The only similiarities is the blonde hair. Listen to Blondie and you get nothing close to Madonna. That No Doubt chick is ripping off Debbie Harry so bad that she should pay royalties.

this wasnt exactly a copy but more like a nod in teena marie's "lovergirl". the prince vibe i get here, is the live drums/drum machine mix which he started on "dirty mind" and perfected with "the time"....

Rick James's look during the "Wonderful" period was a blatant Prince rip-off. It was also a dated prince rip-off. "Wonderful came out in 1988, Rick looks like an extra from Purple rain in this picture. "Loosey's rap" is a good song though. razz The only good song on the album.

Maybe, but personally I don't see it myself. Full Force had a bit of the Time's vibe happening. But that was about it. I loved that song, "I WANT YOU JUST FOR ME!" The DooRags could sing better than most of the acts Prince was producing at the time..

BTW, anybody ever see comedian Eddie Griffin's impersonation of Prince on his old Malcolm & Eddie sitcom? Priceless. He promised Malcolm that Prince would do a gig and of course, Prince didn't show. So Eddie had to put on heavy foundation makeup and book a band to try to fool the audience. Griffin did a better job than most Prince impersonators I know..
