Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Mayte can't dance for shit? Come on, she is supposed to be a professional dancer with experience in all forms of dance, yet she doesn't even do what you would even call "dance" in a lot of the shows! The only video that I think she danced good in was in "The One".

Are you KIDDING ME or WHAT? Mayte is an EXCELLENT dancer. She knows Ballet, and she also does Belly Dancing and Street Dancing. If you saw the Symbol Tour you would have SEEN an AWESOME show with GREAT CHOREOGRAPHY. The One was BEAUTIFUL. I know some Women fans who HATED her cause they were all JEALOUS she was with PRINCe. But, it was so SWEET when you Saw his Eyes Light up over Mayte. He Truly LOVED her. The way he Spoke about missing her when she wasn't in Minnie with him. It was PRECIOUS. I was sooo Happy for him that he FOUND his PERFECT Women . A True fan would ALWAYS WANT her IDOL to be ULTIMATELY HAPPY, COMPLETE and IN LOVE.

i think that she definatley can dance... have not watched the detailed parts of what she does..she can bend a certain way and do one or two things with her bodu at once... i can't explained it the way i want just watch her closely she does things that most can't do.. maybe hip-hop and the normal club type dancing she cant do ...but really watch her..and she knows how to work the camera..of course she was eye candy too..come on in reality if she wasn't who would notice her.

She is a fabulous dancer and moves with so much grace!! Catch The Letterman show in 94, The One video, and Pussy Control at the VH1 fashion honors.

I've been dancin' since I was out of the womb and I can tell you from aheckovalotta experience that Mayte is OFF THE CHAIN. I have never, EVER, seen another dancer come close to her confluence of technique and expressiveness. She's an extermely unique and gifted performer. And a dancer's dancer (our muse) in every way.

Also U can check the 95 VMAs. She ROCKED THAT SHIT!!!!

There was a time when they used to show solo dance pieces performed by Mayte on the lobby monitors at Galm Slam South Beach... and they were straight up MODERN pieces, as if she had studied Graham technique and took master classes from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane company (smile). A lot of local artists who had the chance to see her in Miami show rehearsals or in an occasional private classs in MiamiBeach always remarked to me that it was clear to them that she had classical training...but, being a person who also tarined classically for years but CAN.NOT.STREET.DANCE...I can understand awkward moments when a dancer just doesn't look, well....ON....

If someone as an individual cannot recognise her skill then I'd be inclined to say that the fault lies with the person veiwing her rather than with her dancing. But put a dancer in front of him who's performance is totally unique (and that's the category Mayte falls into) and he couldn't tell you for shit if he/she was a good dancer cos he knows nothing about technique.

Mayte's dancing is definitly unique as she has merged different techniques and developed her own performance style. I have only taken up belly dancing in recent years and that it totally down to the fact that I was utterley blown away by her dancing! She is indeed a muse, I think so, and I guess Prince did too at one time.

Hmmm... check out the Ryde Dyvyne DVD, you can see her when she just joined him and she was "green"... really worked it... I agree about VH1 Fashion Awards and "P Control".. also, you have got to see "18 and Over" video.. my God.. i'm not a lesbian, but damn if she's not hot!

She's not an extraordinary dancer, but if she hadn't hooked up with Prince she could have been a professional dancer in her own right. Not the best ever, but extremely good.

He gave her a great playground to play in.

She's an ok dancer. Nothing special. The does the same moves all the time regardless of what she's dancing to. The P Control thing on vh-1 ... ya'll and seriously reaching.

By the way the 18 & Over video was sexy, that's it. What she did (bump n' grind, spread eagle) any flexible un-trained stripper could do that.

It comes down to a personal definition of what constitues a "good dancer" and I'd definitely be interested to see who stands within that category in the eyes of the folks on here who say Mayte is "OK." My guess would be that these people lack taste/style, in general, and experience in dance/studying dancers (even as a viewer) more specifically. I can appreciate and savor great, well-honed technique -- it takes a crapload of work -- but the special quality in Mayte transcends technique in an intuitive, ethereal way. And, she just happens to have a body and face (and a double jointed back for godssakes!!) that correspond ridiculously well to her personal style of movement, which sets her even further apart from the pack. I'm not saying she hasn't had off nights, but as the dancers here know (hi y'all!!!! ) not only are you not always "on", but for some performances, you just don't need to blow your whole wad! LOL. Sometimes it's not cost-effective to give your all -- you save those for the most important shows -- and that's a totally valid compromise given how hard dance can be on your body. Further, and finally, Prince loves the vibration of rawness, the Real, so sometimes Mayte's grittier, less polished performances are more deliberately addressing that narrative. By being able to do it all, she held his attention for a long, long time!
