I don't think you can blame the guys for not playing on those first two records. Prince was very controlling back then. The frustration of not being able to contribute is what made Jam & Lewis start working on the side with the S.O.S. Band and eventually get fired because it made them miss a Time concert.

I think all the guys in The Time are very talented and it was very satisfying (to me anyway) to hear what a Time album would sound like if some of them were more involved in the creative process (the 'Pandemonium' album). Many people like yourself however, would have preferred if Prince still did everything. I think a band loses a lot of credibilty though if they don't play on any of their albums.
