The Time October 7, 2005 show review

I went and saw the Time at the Bayfest in Mobile, AL on Friday October 7,
2005. This was the 24th time I've seen them and as always we had a fantastic
time.

Things didn't exactly start out well, but it definitely turned around before
the night was over. My buddy Jason was suppose to go with me, but he was
having his latest drama so it was looking like he wasn't going to go.
Luckily, he changed his mind and decided to go with me and have some fun
and put that stuff to the side for a few hours. Jason and Ashley picked me
up around 5:30 p.m. from my house in Pensacola, FL and we made the one hour
drive to Mobile. We got there and got parked no problem at all.

The temperature was in the high 80's all week, but we got that first burst
of fall weather tonight. The temperature dropped atleast 25 degrees and the
north wind was making it seem even worse. We made our way to the gate, paid
to get in and made our way to the stage where the Time were scheduled to
play at 8:15 p.m. When we got there just what I was fearing would happened
had happened. There was a sea of people sitting in the folding chairs. We
had this experience last year at the same festival when we went to see
George Clinton play. People getting upset cause we wanted to stand up and
watch the show. At first we stood to the side so we weren't blocking
anybody, but then we just went up front and sat in front of the stage. Now I
know good and well that most people are not going to be sitting at a Time
show, but I don't know what it is about Mobile, but they act like they have
never been to a concert. Anyway everybody to our right was already standing
up so when it was almost show time we stood up and had no problems except
for one Lady. She was just a total BITCH, no way to get around that. First
she brought her chair up behind me after the show had started(with no regard
for the people behind us she cut in front of) Then she kept complaining that
she couldn't see and she couldn't stand cause her feet hurt( Bitch I had
foot surgery 2 months ago and I wasn't crying about it. No sympathy from
me)Then I did move down a little cause she said she wanted to get a picture.
She was then up there quite awhile, pushing me into two small children that
Ashley let stand in front of her. Then she switched and went around me to
the other side by Jason and she was bitching to him(mind you at this point
almost everybody that is anywhere near the stage is standing) well enough of
my rant, on to the show

The Line up
Morris Day- Vocals and cool
Jerome Benton-vocals, percussion and general mischief maker
Jellybean Johnson- Drums
Monte Moir- Keyboards
Chance Howard- Keyboards
Ricky "Freeze" Smith- Bass
Tori "Freakjuice" Ruffin- Guitar

Before the show, we met Anita(who runs the Morris Day yahoo site and post on
the various Prince boards as well) and her friend. Both very nice ladies, so
that was very Cool.

At about 8:30 p.m., the familiar ticking started and we got hyped. Here is
the setlist with my ever insightful comments afterwards.
1. DAT Intro
2. Ho Parade
3. Wild and loose
4. The Stick
5. Blondie!!!- Kick Ass
6. My Drawers !!!- Ditto
7. Fishnet
8. The Oak Tree
9. Jerk Out
10. Get it Up
11. Cool
12 Gigolos get lonely too
13. 777-9311
14. The Walk!!
15. The Bird
encore
16. Jungle Love

Tori spotted us right off the bat( it didn't hurt that we were in our normal
spot right in front of him, plus he knew we were coming). He yelled
"Rhastus" into the mic and that was very cool. Jerome also saw Jason early
in the show and acknowledged him and even Morris saw him which is a rarity.
For me the beginning of the show is always the highlight, Tori just a
blaring and the fellas hitting the stage with all that energy, usually when
it gets to that if the kid can't make you come/Ice Cream castles bit that
takes 30 minutes I lose some interest. Tonight we were lucky, not only did
they play Blondie and My Drawers( did I mention I like guitar) which is my
favorite part of the show when they play them(and something I haven't seen
them do since 2003), but they also left out the dreaded if the kid/ice Cream
castles bit. Jerome was a madman like always, running out into the audience
and generally trying to get the crowd hyped. They did seem to be having a
few problems tonight. especially with the guitar and keyboards, but it did
little to detract from the show. It was also cool to see the walk in the set
since its another one I haven't seen in a few years. The show was about an
hour, ending right around 9:30 p.m. and I was extremely happy with the
setlist and how long they played especially since Kool and the Gang were
playing after them.

Now normally, this is where my story would end and if Jason wouldn't have
went me it probably would have. He wanted me to call Tori and see if
anything was up. So I did and he told me what hotel they were staying at and
that they would be hanging out in the bar. Luckily it wasn't very far so we
made our way there fairly easy. So we go in there expecting to see Tori and
maybe a few of the other fellas. Low and behold there is Morris sitting at
the bar in street clothes. We got a table behind him. Anita and her friend
had gone to the hotel as well so they joined us. so we are there talking
about the show and other things when Morris turns since he heard us. Jason
decided to see if he could get an autograph which he did and got my
Pandemonium cd cover signed as well. Very Cool. I'm naturally a very shy
person. So I'm wary of bothering anybody famous, especially when I know
people are asking them for pictures and autographs all the time and they
probably just want to unwind from what's going on in their lives. Luckily
Jason is my exact opposite(Talk first, think later), but in this situation
it worked out great. Morris left and we are just chilling waiting to see if
Tori was going to show up. Jellybean came in and we talked to him a little
bit and got stuff signed. Too Cool. A Little bit later, Monte and Jerome
came in. I had the cover to Monte's solo cd and he signed it and I also got
him and Jerome to sign the Pandemonium cd cover( I now have all the cd
covers from the 4 Time albums signed by the 4 original members still in the
group) of course if I knew I was going to be hanging out with them, I would
have brought some rare vinyl : ) Well we ended up hanging out for about 90
minutes or so. Props to all the fellas especially Jerome who spent alot of
time socializing with us. No matter what else is going on(and there has
been alot of BS going on the last year and a half or so). I can always
count on a Time show to give me a break from the normal rut and cheer me up
for a little while
