What would The time have been like had Alexander o'neal been the lead singer?

I've often wondered how this would work. I just can't picture it.

Me neither. Alexander is a much better singer then Morris Day is. But Morris personality, His style and wit fit the band perfectly. Also Jellybean Johnson would'nt have been in the band because Morris was supposed to be the Drummer But took over as lead singer when Alexander Nevermind turned it down. Just for the record let me say that Jellybeans drumming on 777-9311 is awesome!!

Well I doubt Alex would've been the "Morris/Jaime Starr" personality.

Re; 777-9311..... does Jellybean actually play the beat live in concert, or the drum machine?

"Sleigh-ride" might be an example of what it might've sounded like.

(Hope I got the song title right.)

I've seen the Time in concert. Being a drummer myself, I can tell you that Jellybean played live drums to that song perfectly. And made it look simple.

I agree with most of the posts here.

I think Alexander can sing well enough, but when performing he comes off as being.. "stiff", or as someone who takes himself too seriously. I think his "energy" would have dulled The Time. I suppose they would have still been good, but not as good as they were with Morris in front.

the (apparent) irony is, I've read & heard many times that before The Time, Morris was a rather quiet & shy person - much different than the "dapper gigolo" personna he normally displays..

yeah, with O'Neal fronting the group they would have been quite different

The Linn Drum was used on the studio recording of 777-9311.....not Jellybean,
not Prince, not Morris, not John Blackwell, not John Bonham, not Buddy Rich...

I know... although I think there might be some live drums on it too in addition to the Linn. Then again I read somewhere the drum program was a preset on the Linn, but I doubt that since it's very unusual.... with that syncopated snare hit coming just before the "2". Edited to say that I was saying this from memory; listening today I realize the syncopation that makes this song so funky is that the first note and kick drum is actually played after the "1", and sometimes the snare comes just AFTER the "2". smile

I want to know what Jellybean uses live.... cuz he has to use a pad at least to get the claps sound.

Jellybean did use a certain pad when I saw the Time perform at 1st Ave nightclub. It had to be a programmable pad because he used the same one when they performed "Gigolos Get lonely Too" I don't think the clap is a necessity to make "777-9311" work. Only a musician would notice if it were'nt there.

I love Morris and Alexander, but I think it worked out the way its supposed to. Ca you imagine the time taking a back seat to Alexanders on-stage-on-bed antics?! He is a bit too serious for the time i guess...

Alexander Nevermind... wasn't this one of P's pseudonames? I never really put it together before now that that name was a crack at Alexander O'neal.

But anyhoo, what is the hidden message behind the visine crack. Was Alex always high on weed?

I remember on some video show, they were about to show the video for"innocent". The comedian hosting the show made mention of his red eyes. He said " must be the bad food at the diner." (If you've seen the video, you'd get the joke")

nod Yeah, his eyes were red during his videos. Perhaps, he was using then. Of course, he's been clean for quite some time now.
