Wendy and Lisa are excellent at what they do. But I don't see the hype over JJ. She has 0 talent to me, but this is just my opinion.

Even though this thread seems like "baiting"... I"ll reply against my better judgement.

Regading Jill.. .. . As stated, people have different opinions... some like her album, others don't. Personally, I love the album even though I don't listen to it that often.

I think the "overrated" aspect--which let me go on record as saying I DON"T think she is overrated"-- comes from the fact that her album was so UNAVAILABLE. It's the old economic law of supply and demand. It's nearly impossible to get her album on CD, If you can, it's usually like $100. I know I only had it on cassette for many years, and when we all switched to CDs in the car, discmen etc..... I didn't have the oppty to hear my old cassette copy.

Back in the day a friend had a cd-burner which was very rare at the time, and he made me a CD copy which I was so excited about! Eventually I got my own legit copy off of ebay for like $50 which at the time was a "bargain".

Anyway, my theory is that if the album had been released in the US on CD and been more available, people wouldn't get so heated about discussing her. I think the "haters" are annoyed that her album is considered rare and so expensive.

In terms of W&L..... I think a lot of people bring their own prejudices and particular pet peeves to bear in the discussion.

Fact is, Prince gave them more input and creative freedom than any other band member at that point (and probably since). We can only speculate as to his reasons.

It seems logical that a primary reason is their talent, but we really can't answer for P, now can we?

Personally, I think it's clear that they added a lot to the Revolution sound and songwriting... but that's a subjective opinion.

It is a fact that W&L continued to have successful careers as working musicians, producing and writing songs in both the record and film/tv industries, even if they never achieved "pop star" status again.

Other than Sheila (who already had a successful career in the industry before), none of the other proteges really seemed to do that (unless you count Andre Cymone with his work with JOdy, though I don't know if he qualifies as a "protege").

Anyway, this is my take on it.

Of course there will always be people who have their own axe to grind, but I'm trying to stick to objective "facts" which might explain why people get so emotional about it.

I can respect any opinion. But I always want facts - something that is undisputable. People go on about all this creative input and songwriting that Wendy and Lisa did but where is the real proof? Are those solo albums they did anywhere near as good as Parade or Purple Rain? What have they done post Prince that would indicate that they were this driving force behind the brilliant mid 80s Prince music? For example, there was the hard core lie that they wrote or co wrote Purple Rain. W&L fans believed this for years until Wendy herself admitted that they didnt write it during the interview on the new Purple Rain DVD - they just got credit for something that monumental with nothing but specualtion and hearsay to back it. All I am saying is show me what tunes they were responsible for on Prince albums. She me how they contributed more than Dez Dickerson who has a permanent stamp on the development of Prince from helping with Vanity 6, The Time, and other thing s he wasnt credited with. And his one contribution that is obvious and known clearly by everyone - the guitar on Little Red Corvette - is the kind o ftangilbe proof I want in order to give Wendy and Lisa half the resp[ect that I think so many uninformed fans offer them.

Yes they can! I don't think "those solo albums they did [are not] anywhere near as good as Parade or Purple Rain" can be taken as fact, just as opinion. Eroica may not be as good as either Purple Rain or Parade but it comes pretty damn close, but that's just my opinion. Having said that, I do agree that they seem to be given far more praise than they are due. For me, Eroica was the pinnacle of their creative ability (although I haven't heard GirlBros, so what do I know). I certainly don't remember being in awe of their creative input to the Purple Rain - Parade era. Do people really believe that "they were this driving force behind the brilliant mid 80s Prince music"? I would've thought it's fairly obvious that the only driving force behind the brilliant Prince music of any era is Prince himself. I think most of the slobbering people do about Wendy and Lisa is just down to nostalgia for a bygone era.

Sorry I could only offer you more opinion and no undisputable facts. biggrin

Well, it's obvious the person who started this is really just trying to create drama.

You asked for "Facts" and then talk about how certain albums "are not as good" as others. That is just opinion.

The bottom line is W&L did contribute to certain songs and the facts can be borne out by doing a search on the Copyright database, which wil show which songs they have recieved official credit for.

I'm pretty sure that if one were to count up all the songs they received credit for vs. other band members, one would find out that they contirubted to more songs than anyone else.

In terms of uncredited stuff nad what various fans want to believe or odn't believe, that is irrelevant.

I've given my opinion on here about Jill several times. It's no secret that I think Jill is a helluva vocalist and her talent wasn't tapped to it's full potential when she was working with P. I can't stand the material P gave her on her solo album. As far as Lisa and Wendy, I stated on here a few times on this as well. I've ALWAYS dug Lisa. From the moment she joined P's band in 80, I 've dug her. Lisa is a very good musician, added some shit to what P was doing, and I'm speaking on the time before Wendy joined. Wendy is a good guitarist, she had to be able to hold her own if she was going to play with Prince. Lisa and Wendy added shit to P's thing, there's no doubt about that. Prince, I feel, NEVER would have done an album like UTCM if Lisa and Wendy weren't there. He wanted their vibe and they gave it. Even Around The World, IF P would have stepped that way, it would have been a lot different than it turned out. So, Lisa and Wendy, as musicians and songwriters, are valid. Not crazy about they're solo joints, but that's cool to. I say more power to them.

My opinion is that Wendy and lisa are good what they are doing as composers, songwriting, and also musicians and they are very talented even though I digged Wendy's style more. I mean Prince had trusted them more than other members besides Dez so they must did something right. I kinda knew that they didn't co-wrote or have anything to do with Purple Rain because when Prince wrote Purple Rain early on Wendy just joined the band and I don't think he had that trust in Wendy and Lisa just yet so I don't understand why people keep insisting that and even Wendy admitted herself.

I don't know about them being driven force behind Prince's music because Prince didn't stop made good music after 1986 but I have to admitted he started to loose his edge after SOTT and I don't think it is totally have to do with W&L's departure but they did added some good flavors to the ingredients that Prince cooking. They were part of the memorable music period but wasn't behind it.

I like a few songs of their solo albums and the ones that i like are their most funk and also pop/dance songs but that still didn't stop me from always wondering about them and also wanted them to work with Prince again.

W&L maybe overrated on here but outside here they are underrated. People do be hearing their contributions on certain radio stations and tv shows and movies without knowing it is them and also people still believes that Jill Jones or some nameless female sangs the opening of 1999 which in fact it was Lisa and Wendy even told me that through email years ago and not the mention that people often get them mixed up and don't even know their names. Or the photographer referred to Wendy as a guest of her current director girlfriend in picture's caption without realizing that she was once part of the most memorable bands in music history and that Wendy been around longer than her girlfriend's Laurel Canyon fame.

Regarding Jill Jones, of all of the female Prince proteges (Vanity, Crapples, Susan Moonsie, Susannah Melvoin Carmen, Mayte) she had the most decent voice. However, I always felt she was a better back up vocalist than lead singer. When she tried to go beyond her range her vocals could be very shrill (like nails on a chalk board). And no way is her album worth more than $10 bucks.

Regarding W&L, some of their contributions were fantastic. But at times they spearheaded a bunch of hippy dippy mess. Lisa was a good keyboardist but after a while her solos became predictable. Wendy was in no way a better guitarist than Dez or Mikko and she sang off key way too much for my liking in a live setting.

Forget the stupid baiting..... someone raised an interesting question.....

Just who is singing the female part on 1999? I always thought for sure what ended up as a the female "solo" was Jill?

(those of us who did our research smile know that the verses were originally sung in unison and Prince dropped out the vocals on each line so they now sound like each line is a solo)

It sounds more l ike Jill to me than Lisa.

And as much as I like Lisa, I agere with the comment that her voice seemed to work better as bg singer than solo. Then again we only get to hear her do lead on like 1 or 2 songs on the W&L albums and for some reason it was a bit underwehlming. But she sounds awesome doing bg's on P cuts. confuse

Snap

Lisa has a sweet voice -- never mind songs like "Head" and "Jack U Off" -- her voice fits perfectly on songs like "A Place in Heaven" and "Don't Try To Tell Me" -- I'd love to hear more.

Yes true that Lisa came in the picture early on but before Dirty Mind and after he was done with the second LP. Beside co-writing The stick and done little work for Appollonia 6 album and sang background here and there, she haven't done anything creatively significant until around Purple Rain and even Purple Rain she was basically a performer. Prince didn't relied or completely trusted her creatively until Wendy joined and also before ATWIAD and if Wendy haven't join the band to voice her opinion, I think that Lisa would been just another for hired member because she intend to just be happy being in the background and play her ivories and unlike Wendy she just isn't the type to stand up what right and wrong alone creatively. So both of them together has helped gained prince trust on them. So please clarified of your claim of how Wendy and Lisa were the ones that made Prince again?

I respect your opinion but I disagreed of if weren't for W&L then Prince wouldn't have the career he has. I could see why sometimes non-W&L fans sort disses some W&L fans and it can get very emotional too up in here. Because some people do give them credit on some songs and contributions that they have nothing to do with. I cool with everyone likes what they like but I don't like when people sort of exaggerated a bit at times or doesn't say the facts. I like wendy and lisa and even I know that Prince have the career because of the musical genius that he is and wendy and lisa has helped him a lot more ATWIAD and Parade. I always think that Purple Rain is Prince album while ATWIAD and Parade are the Wendy Prince and Lisa album.

Again prince managed to do fine with or without them and same goes for them even if the average person doesn't know W&L by name or their work other than them being part of the Purple Rain era.

eek DAMN NEWBIES. Some opinions need not to be expressed.

Prince would not have the career his is known for if it weren't for the girls. Rememeber, Lisa came in the picture around the 2nd LP (Prince).

I agree. Call them overrated is a bit harsh, because they are are extremly talented writers and outstanding musicians. Underated is more like it.

In the book "Possessed," Monte Moir is quoted, that all of the musicians around MN were afraid to play (live) in front of Prince, because it would end up on Warner Bros Records." This was from, For You to 1999. Prince is the man! I respect his talent, musicianship and artistry. There is and will be no other. But his true talent is finding unknown musicians who can really play and somehow use it to his advantage. Think about it, prince taught himself how to play by learning songs off the radio and listening to what was around the house. He would listen and watch other musicians and then would play the same, note for note. A true gift! It has also been said that a lot of his "hits" came out of rehersing/jam sessions with his band mates. Prince was also known to record these. Musicians often play what feels best in the moment. Prince would take that and come up with what we love today.

I didn't mean to offend anyone.

Overrated as artists??? That's debatable. Underrated, Yes! (This is not just for W&L & Jill, but for all of the MPLS musicians that played with Prince)

If you haven't seen the documentary, "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown," you owe it to yourself to see this film. Wouldn't it be great to see Brownmark, Sheila, W&L, Dez, Mico, Fink, Andre Cymone, etc, etc, all old and gray haired discussing the same as the Funk Bros!!?? lol

I am not sure if anyone really thinks W&L are the "driving force" behind W&L.
I think many people think that unlike many of Prince's proteges and band members, these 2 had talent that could and do stand alone. To put them in the same catergory as Prince is really unfair, pointless and nothing more than baiting.
And I am not a Wendy and Lisa fan. I just really did appreciate the sound Prince had when they were in his band. I liked the singing and harmonies etc. Moreso than prince's songs with Candy Dulfer singing, or for that matter Rosie or Bonnie.

Oh yes Prince had his shared of having someone else's tunes on Warner Bros and even Wendy or Lisa said that they have to hide some of their material afraid that Prince going to use it without credit them but at the same time Prince had some some wonderful masterpieces without their input as well.
