On that song she sounds stupid, but there are others. You should listen to baby you're a trip. She sounds much better, like a true R&B singer. | |

I agree "Mia Boca" sounds like one of those typical protege records but "Baby your a trip" is the shiznit...and "Violet blue" and "For you" I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am | |

----- I have been saying this for years and warning people. That chick had a horrible voice. The music is great but she sucks ass as a singer. | |

JJ was a background singer on so many of P's cuts in the 1999 days, and she was great. She was also a backup singer for Teena Marie, which I don't think was an easy gig to get. So I don't know what gives. I like JJ's album, though. I like the whole vibe of it. I appreciate it best when it's listened to in its entirety in a sitting. It's actually quite a short album. Come here, babe.. yeah... | |

I dig her voice she sounds a lot like Gwen Stefani | |

Jill has talent and a strong voice, for sure.
And the *music* on her debut album is great. IMO, I do think she overdoes the screechiness angle a tad on it, however. | |

I also don't like Mia Bocca, but I do like G-spot, and Baby, you're a trip. The music to Mia Bocca I like it better it being instrumental like it was in the movie Under The Cherry Moon. | |

Her album is OK but she would have had a much better album if Prince had given her one around the time of "1999" or "Purple Rain". It would have been that bad ass "Minneapolis Sound" and she would at least have had a fighting chance like Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6. Poor Jill didn't get her album until people had lost interest in Prince and his new sound. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Yeah, her album sounded like something that should have came out in between 1982 and 1984. I think she should have been the lead singer for 6 (Jill 6), but I guess she would have had to have been fucking Prince like Vanity was. | |

Unlike many other female Prince proteges,Jill Jones can actually sing, but unfortunately,on her debut album she didn't use her vocals very well.On too many songs, she does alot of screaming, yelling and Prince-inspired yelps. It becomes embarassing at times. She sometimes sounds as if she is losing her mind, lol. For the most part, the songs are good, but the vocals needed more restraint and less gimmicks. Absolutely.I always felt that her album came out too late.By 1987,the whole "G-spot" concept was already old (lol) and many of the other songs ("All Day All Night"..."Mia Bocca") simply sounded outdated by 1987.In fact,The Revolution (who plays on her album) weren't even together by the time Jill's album was finally released! Her album should have come out in 1985,when she could taken advantage of the "Purple Rain" hype from several months earlier. | |

J.J. can blow. Just listen to the tracks off of the 1999 album and the "What Time Is It?" album. P was a punkass for not giving Jill an album of some funk/rock material circa 1999/Purple Rain. That's the kind of material J.J. should have been doing. She DEFINATELY should have had an album in 84, no doubt about it. Teena's "Emerald City" album, side 1, THAT'S what Jill should have been doing during the Purple Rain explosion. Half of the material on Mazarati's album should have been given to J.J. I hate the material he gave her on her album. That to me, was super sorry. And he knew it. That's why he held off on her album, untill he jumped off into that Paris, France type of thing he was doing. He knew that shit didn't fit Jill. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. thedog said: Militant said: Prince was fucking JJ. She always claims she didn't Well it's well-known that she was. However, I think her comments are about the fact that I don't think anyone would want to advertise/admit that she was somebody's "holla back" girl. A "B-lister" who was with him when he wasn't busy with his new finds... hate to say it, but it's true.. Come here, babe.. yeah... | |

People may love it and call it "genius" on this site but the most of the general public hated it. He was so absorbed with a "Lawrence Welk" sound at the time with the orchestras and shit, that some of it bled over into Jill's album. A lot of people bought "Parade" simply because it was Prince but they weren't going to buy the same type of shit that disappointed them with Jill, who was not very well known. She should have been given an album with the synthesizers and shit (and NO DAMN ORCHESTRAS) like Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6. She may not have become a huge star but at least she would have sold as well as they did. Jesse Johnson was doing well at the time of Jill Jones and so was Andre Cymone producing Jody Watley. Why?....because they didn't have Prince putting damn orchestras on their songs turning people off. [Edited 7/5/05 19:31pm] Andy is a four letter word. | |
