Revolution Survivor - Round 2

Welladay. In Round One of Revolution Survivor, Dez Dickerson is the first one to buy the farm.

And then there were five.

Wendy Melvoin
Lisa Coleman
Bobby Z.
Dr. Fink
Brown Mark

Which one goes noe? I vote for Brown Mark.

(And if you don't like this topic, you don't have to look at it or vote.) razz razz razz razz razz razz razz razz razz razz

co-sign. he is a good bass player but i don't like his personality he too quiet. i wouldn't vote him off have they allow the brotha to have some lines on purple rain.

wow the remainders are from the 1983-86 band but i having a feeling that the choices isn't getting any easier since many people liked the revolution as the best band.

(Leaves us needing a bass player, tho. We can replace him with MeShell, or maybe Mike Elizondo, please.)

Shows what you know about drumming. ?uestlove who is an awesome drummer gives mad respect to Bobby for having to run the drum machine and play and rarely missed a cue.

He's still the drum machine tech. ?uestlove was giving him props for being able to pay attention, not miss cues and "operate" the drum machine at the same time. where is the drumming? Early on (79-81) he may have played more but 1999-Parade his role was limited. Hell he even admitted it. Prince was expanding his sound and he could not stretch. I think W&L may have had problems hanging in the after show gig settings playing 'maybe your baby, skin tight or soul sacrifice".

Wendy appearantly had problems when Prince expanded the Revolution. She was wasn't to pleased with the r&b revue style show they were presenting. Musician mag(now out of print) summer/fall 88 did a cover story on Prince as the US Lovesexy tour was kicking off. Article stated Z, W&L were let go because "they couldn't keep up" and Mark and Doc were asked to stay. As we know only Doc stayed.

None of this is to discredit their musicianship. They had their time and place. I don't think the NPG would have worked in Purple Rain.

gotcha.....the only thing wrong with this scenerio is that it doesnt add up...

1) wendy and lisa had pretty much made it known they were leaving...they didnt agree with the direction that prince was taking the band plus..and this is a huge part of it; the break up of prince and susannah was hard on them.....prince learned of this and *then* decided to dismiss them.....

2) sure, prince might have said that he dismissed them because they couldnt hang but prince talks out of his ass about tons of stuff...and so does wendy...and they had a very major battle through the media..i dont take much of what either of them said during all that time....the only thing i know is that:

a. prince wrote "in this bed i scream" for them...would he really write a song (and release it on an album..thats huge right there cause we all know prince writes personal songs..but he never...never ever ever ever has released a song and acknowledged who it was for) if he thought they "couldnt hang"?

b. they had a husband & wife and wife relationship....and we all know how those are....Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf anyone?

c. in the past prince has declared lisa one of two of the all time best piano players....and recently he; well...look at everlasting now's sigie if ya wanna know what he said about wendy. now, sure he could have been talking out his arse again..but we have two contradicting statements that void each other out...which leaves us with my point a & b.

agreed..but like i said, he has made statements that contradicted the whole "cant hang" theory..so in my book all the statements cancelled out and what we are left with is they got an emotional divorce for personal reasons..not craftmanship..

the one thing i do agree with is that he wanted to go in a different musical direction and that wendy and lisa were being far to influential with him for his own liking..he was becoming lazy (and he knew this...) so he cut them to re-juvinate himself....and boy did it work; for a while..

Man Prince always contradicting himself and I dont pay attention to what that silly fool says half the time unless he is singing, but still him being a musical genius is consistant.

I think that after Prince fired Wendy and Lisa, i think that the ingredients were missing in some of his songs and always wondered what would sound like have W&L contributed? but at the same time he hasn't lost his edge completely. He still make some briallent music after they left and my fav albums were SOTT of course and also Batdance and Emancipation and also recently Musicology. And also Wendy and Lisa too have proven they just more than keyboardist and guitarist. So therefore I felt that they influence each other. Prince sort of influence them of producing and take control what u creat while they influence him of like Prince you done this already lets try something that wasnt done before.

I hated to dissed my girl Wendy but she ought to know better than to get mad at Prince for him trying to make the band into another R&B one rather than a Beetles band like she wanted. It like a Microsoft programmer tells Bill Gates how to run his company. She was the employee and he was the employer whether she liked his decisions or not he was her boss, he signed her paychecks, and he going to make decisions based on what he felt that was best for him. I guess W&L's influence must have been to powerful for him to handle and that why it contributes his decision to dismissed him. Although there are unknown reasons why he cutted them loose but I always think that Prince fired them because he felt hurt and betrayed that they was about to leave him early on so he sort of saying Well I really need them for this tour and after it ends I cutting them loose.

and yes also the susannah factor. It funny how Wendy complained about her sister being around then-was slightly part of the revolution and also was engaged to him but yet to this day they hangs at many events together. I think that Wendy realized she could never be so separated from her other half of the egg yet at the same time she happens to be her only alive sibling.

Overall what in the past happened and no one could change it. I hated to say this but I don't think that they going to back to the studio to make hundreds songs again together because their music and mood had change and also their lifestyles as well and also not to mention that Wendy and Lisa isn't going back to be submissive under Prince's dictatorship because they now used to do things their own way. But I think that we going to see the three of them back in the studio to work like a couple tracks for old time sakes or even an onstage reunion;-)
