Are all these groups are rip offs??? Maybe some are more liked inspired or influenced by Prince, which is not a bad thing.

Now what should I call my Purple Band? lol

That's very true. When I saw RFTW in concert at Magic Mountain in 86, their whole stage show, the dance steps, etc, was STRAIGHT Jessie from his video "I Want To Be Your Man".

Anybody Remember "Dreamboy." They had an EP on Quncy Jones label, Qwest back in 1983. The single "Don't Go" was a blatent "Do Me Baby rip-off. Heavily made up, and trying very hard to cap the MN sound. They also had a very Prince inspired song called "Gett Off," way before P recorded it. It's not the same song.

nod Dreamboy was the shit. Vain Baby and I were talking about that in thread a couple months ago. I think the Do Me ripoff you're refering to was a song called I Promise.

If anything 'Don't Go' was more reminiscent of 'Oh, Baby'. But nonetheless, Dreamboy had some outstanding ballads like 'I Promise (I Love You)', 'I Want To Know Your Name' and 'No One Can Treat Me Like U' among others. Definitely Prince influenced, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they bit.

I remember Dreamboy.I have their first album on vinyl. It was VERY Prince-influenced.It's funny listening to "Don't Go"....the lead singer sounds like he's struggling to hit those Princely high notes, lol. My favorite track is the uptempto "Walk The Streets",which got alot of airplay in my area.

ONe thing can be said for all of these rip off acts: they could at least play and write music to some extent. This is more that can be said for the no-talent punks that pass as R&b and hip hop artists today.

Very true . . . . . Todays manufactured R&B/POP/Hip Hop is pure D trash. Even todays rock is garbage. Actually most music has sucked since about 1992.
