The early 80s era of acts like Prince and Rick James is one of my very favourite, and I'm am scribbling down all the names of these albums! I know the Bar-Kays, but some of the others are all new to me.

I sent one of my songs to the Barkays back in 96 -97.

It was called Yum Yum.

James Alexander (the bass player) called me at home and hooked Larry Dodson (the lead singer)up on three way.

The said they loved the song and wanted to use it on their new album called 48hrs.

But said they only had 48hrs. to get it off to press to meet their deadline.

They said it would take about 10 days just for their lawyers to do the paperwork.

So they asked if they could use it for one of the artist they had on their new record label.

I said cool, but never heard anything else on it.

They probably re-worked it like they did everyone elses.

I never heard anything released that sounded like "Yum Yum."

I wish they had let me write & produce that 48 Hrs. cd, because to me, it was their worst album to date.

The songs were terrible. They just weren't Barkays type tracks.

Larry said he could hear his influence on me.

I think they were just big Prince fans and heard some Prince there, too.

That's one reason they wanted the song.

Next to Prince, they have had the biggest impact on my sound.

And next to Prince and P-Funk, they put on one of the best live shows...Ever.

This is funny, because I referenced this album in an earlier thread. I haven't listened to it in close to 20 years. Although JAK's album wasn't so much a direct bite of Prince's music as it was heavily influenced by Prince. If you want true biting, you'd have to listen to an album called 'Circuitry Starring Sam Bostic'. Now this shit was directly lifted from Prince. I'm talking note for note. The single from this album was a song called 'Cold Tears'. It's pure comedy and worth buying for that alone.

Does anyone recall a Minneapolis funk/R&B band known as Exotic Storm? They released ther album in the mid-80s (1986,I think).I've never heard it,but the review in Black Beat magazine was really harsh.They were criticized for stealing many of Prince's ideas.Apparently,the lyrics were absurd.On a song called "I'll Save You From The World",the lead singer actually says..

"Slide" and "X-N-Yo-Sex" were OK but not up to par with previous Bar-Kays jams. The remake of "If Loving You Is Wrong" with Evelyn "Champaign" King was horrible. I did love the megamix though, it was worth the cost of the CD alone.

You must haven't heard their latest CD that they released in either 2003 or 2004. This one is definately their worst. I went into the Tower Records site and listened to samples of each one of the songs and there wasn't one funk jam on the whole damn CD. The whole album had that mellow hip hop vibe to it that could fit in with today's music. I didn't even waste my money buying that one and I am a huge Bar-Kays fans. Plus, I be damned if I was going to buy something with a hip hop flavor and help it to grow when I've been waiting forever for hip hop to go out of style. I see that album didn't sell too well, hopefully The Bar-Kays won't try that mess again.

Have you ever heard their song that was released in either 1993 or 1994 called "Put A Little Nasty On It"? This song was only released as single and an album was never released. I absolutely love this jam. Even though hip hop had taken over the airwaves back then, the Bar-Kays still stayed true to their funk roots and came out with a hardcore funk jam. This song didn't even sound like it belonged in the 1990s, it sounded more like something from the 1980s. Too bad it didn't get any airplay because I definately needed some relief from all the hip hop all over the radio during that time.

The Bar-Kays ain't never been the same or probably will never be the same again, since their producer Allen Jones died.




Hell yeah! The outrageousness, the fire, the snakes.....they definately put on a HELL of a show! I've seen them live 5 times and still can't get enough of them.

Exactly. I knew better than to buy that Gap Band album because I had already been burned with an album they did a few years earlier called "Ain't Nothing But A Party". It should have been called "Ain't No Party Up In Here".

I just heard Charlie Wilson's new song today on the radio and it sounds absolutely horrible. It sounds like some R. Kelly shit.

R.Kelly is a genuis at ruining these Old School artists and bands.Just look at what he did to the once-prestigious Isley Bros

The best thing about his work with the Isley Brothers, is that it gave me a few minutes to go the the restroom and piss out some of the beer I had been drinking at their concert.

"Oh Sheila" by Ready For The World was pretty close to a Prince recording. I loved it back in the day but listening to it now it bites hard on the Purple One.

What I can't get though is how do u not think that Jak isn't biting? Come on player, all his songs are a combination of at least 2 P songs put together. If not three. His music publishing is called "Jack U Up". In my mind, Jak is a severe biter! He has this one song on there that is JUST like "Something In The Water". If P hadn't released the songs that he had and THEN Jak came out with this, then it would be killin'. BUT.....

I guess when I think of those songs specifically, I hear a strong Prince influence but not actually lifting songs note for note. Sam Bostic literally lifted entire sections of Prince's music. I was waiting for the lawsuit to drop.
