J.J. can blow. Just listen to the tracks off of the 1999 album and the "What Time Is It?" album. P was a punkass for not giving Jill an album of some funk/rock material circa 1999/Purple Rain. That's the kind of material J.J. should have been doing. She DEFINATELY should have had an album in 84, no doubt about it. Teena's "Emerald City" album, side 1, THAT'S what Jill should have been doing during the Purple Rain explosion. Half of the material on Mazarati's album should have been given to J.J. I hate the material he gave her on her album. That to me, was super sorry. And he knew it. That's why he held off on her album, untill he jumped off into that Paris, France type of thing he was doing. He knew that shit didn't fit Jill.

nod
I like Jill's voice also and I have her CD that was not produced by Prince, and her style was totally different, more like Tori Amos, and a little like Alanis Morrisette, and she has a pretty good voice. Not unforgettable but definitely listenable. I would say her voice is as good as Janet Jackson boxed
Janet had talented producers to hook her up.
Jill lucked out in the producer dept.
my opinion..

"Mia Bocca" is a cool song, but I wouldn't have chosen it as a single.A much better choice would have been "My Man",a vibrant pop number that could have been a big hit in 1987.

Exactly....that "Parade" type shit. People may love it and call it "genius" on this site but the most of the general public hated it. He was so absorbed with a "Lawrence Welk" sound at the time with the orchestras and shit, that some of it bled over into Jill's album. A lot of people bought "Parade" simply because it was Prince but they weren't going to buy the same type of shit that disappointed them with Jill, who was not very well known.

She should have been given an album with the synthesizers and shit (and NO DAMN ORCHESTRAS) like Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6. She may not have become a huge star but at least she would have sold as well as they did. Jesse Johnson was doing well at the time of Jill Jones and so was Andre Cymone producing Jody Watley. Why?....because they didn't have Prince putting damn orchestras on their songs turning people off.

please folks, sharing your opinion is great and all but dont act like you can speak on behalf of the world....

personally, i enjoy jill's voice..yes, like davideye said , it can be a bit of too much....

and making blanket statements about "white fans" and "black fans" is so unneccesary and drags down the level of the discussion.....if your interested in what "white fans" and "black fans" think, simply ask them....

Well, if we MUST bring race into this, Jill is half black. This I know from Andre Cymone, who I know personally and has worked with. Second, J.J. has always gotten much respect from the black folks that I know. The same black folks that give it up to Teena, gives it up to Jill. I see where u are coming from with the white folks digging Wendy and Lisa, but, Jill doesn't fall into the camp, from what I see.

Well I'm certainly glad to hear that because the employees in the record store used to let me use their employee discount when buying records back in the day. I had just assumed that it was because I was one of the store's biggest customers. Now that I know that I am just a knucklehead that doesn't know music, I'm convinced that they gave me the discount because of my extreme good looks.

yeah..theres no screaming..but she does something else vocally on that album that grates me at times...

not hating cause i love the album but.....she likes to execute her vocals with unusual flare...

interesting enough, lisa coleman likes to do this too (dont try to tell me)....they both seem to be running from their "pop girl" sound of 1999. and for me, thats the best display of both of their vocal range...cause they BLOW in that song.....

I agree. Lisa and Jill sounded the best during this period. Probably cuz P wanted a certain sound and vibe from them vocally.

I totally agree with your view on Janet's voice. My point is, if Janet with her non singing azz can make it big, JJ (funny, their initials are the same) Jill Jones should have had a decent career, along the lines of Regina Bell's success.
That is all I am saying.

BG keeping it real. Thank you!
I think Jill should have had a bigger career than she did. Maybe if she hooked up with Rick James, or Quincy Jones she would have had a better chance. A good producer would help her form her own marketable style instead of trying to fit in a feminine Prince mold. Which in my opinion, all of P's early female acts, were all about a female version of himself. For Jill, it seems to me, too little too late. I think she knows it too and that is why she has somewhat a grudge against P, becuase he held her back with the CONtract, that he has the nerve to talk against, when someone has a CONtract on him. (so to speak).

Jill has a great voice and also I wished that Rick James took her on instead of Prince and even though I like Prince and his music I felt that he improperly market her well actually Paisley Park. I felt that if she was under Rick's wing, since after all he worked with Jill's "older sister" Teena Marie, she would been well-known than she already had. She got the look and the voice too and she was very young at that time. It furious me sometimes that Prince had this potential star here but just didn't focus on her until it was too late but yet he managed to put his energy on talentless musicians. Too bad.

As for Wendy and Lisa they are talented of what they do best as composers and instrumentalists but I just couldn't get into their albums. However when comes to listening to who sings better I preferred Lisa over Wendy. It just too bad that Lisa was too shy to participated in more leading vocals at that time. Also speaking of them I agreed that they are too overated in my opinion and also isn't funny that the Prince albums that I like they have little or no input. And if Prince ever have a reunion and he obivious going to try to invite them, I hope that he going to invited Andre and Dez as well because they were my favorite bandmembers.

Oh I have the ulmost respect for others views just as long as they have the same for me and I be fighting with those pro W&L who bashing others for not feel the same about them. And I dont blame you if u dont have time for because people will always be people.

Wendy and Lisa (i thought Wendy is half jewish because of her mom and also Lisa is half latina because of her mom too) could be black and also I still feel the same about their albums. If the musician has the good sound and yes sometimes voice then that what counts not the race because good music has no color.

Back to Jill. I felt that Prince screwed her big time and yet he focus his energy and time on other chicks because of their looks not talented. Not only that he or his company didnt properly promote her, but he gave her a small role on Graffiti Bridge, and that because she was under contract with him she didn't able to explore other opportinutes. I have to hand to Jill for being patient and also subtle of putting up with Prince when comes to business side. I am glad that she finally woke up around the Graffiti Bridge era and finally realized who Prince really was and she no longer have to put up with his crap.

Now I heard that Prince is starting making up people in the past like Dez, Wendy, and others and I hope that he could able to reach out to Jill and tell her how sorry he was and that he couldn't change the past of how he mistreated her but at least that he could able to focus on the present and future. A lot of people want a Prince and W&L reunion which that is their Kool Aid but I personally preferred want a Prince and Jill duet.

as long as we respect each other's personal taste then its all good..

its just the "haters" who have to call wendy and lisa "white chicks" or "carpet munchers" and what not to get their point accross who i have no time for...

Oh I have the ulmost respect for others views just as long as they have the same for me and I be fighting with those pro W&L who bashing others for not feel the same about them. And I dont blame you if u dont have time for because people will always be people.

Wendy and Lisa (i thought Wendy is half jewish because of her mom and also Lisa is half latina or indian because of her mom too) could be black and also I still feel the same about their albums.
