And if you want to be exact about it, I've been told (and heavens knows I could be wrong) that if your parent or grandparent is Hispanic, that makes you Hispanic. Out of curiousity, I picked up a government type paper (I forgot what it was; it was something that had to do with driving) and looked at it, and it defined "black" as "not of Hispanic origin". So TECHNICALLY, Nona would be Hispanic according to the U.S. government. (I wonder what is on her official papers?)

[Edited 8/2/05 21:53pm]

I think this is in the case of EXCLUDING caucasian... there again establishing that if you are mixed with anything other than white, even if you appear white... your race is classified as the non-white race.
I am sure there are some hispanics mixed with white who look more white than anything... however if there is hispanic in ancestory, than you are hispanic.
And if you are mixed with anything from Africa, than you are black/african american.
As far as the islands... just like slaves from Africa were sent to United states, some were sent to the islands to help work on the sugar plantations.... so some Carribeans can also trace their roots to Africa.

Even if we assume that her father Marvin was AA, you can't just chunk 1/4 Irish and 1/4 Cuban out of the window just because you want to. I don't think that anyone is arguing that Nona isn't black, but to say she's African-American is a bit of a stretch.
[Edited 8/2/05 21:53pm]

I didn't make the rules...
My daughter is Black and white. When she was born, she looked like a caucasian newborn... the nurse who discharged her even checked the box caucasian, not of hispanic origin. then she crossed that out and checked black/african american.
So I guess my husband's heritage (scottish/irish) was "chucked" out of the window. And you know what? That is okay. It is great to be black, some wonderful history. I really don't see what's the fuss is all about. Nona's daddy was black as my daddy, Nona is a beautiful, black, woman. Anyone with eyes can see that. Oh, and I interchange the term black with African American. And since Marvin Gaye presumably traces his roots to Africa, and Marvin was indeed Nona's dad... and she is American... uhhhh, that makes her AFrican American.
Like I said before... I didn't make these rules; white people did.

Okay, but what if you're mixed with both? The U.S. government says that one's Hispanic heritage takes precedence over one's African heritage (though I honestly believe that's the case ONLY to dilute the number of blacks on the record and boost the number of Hispanics). And what about the blacks from Spanish-speaking countries and have Latin lineage? Hispanics/Latinos can be black, too. Look at Gina Torres! You going to tell her she's not Hispanic? She's Afro-Latina, but she's still Hispanic. So was Celia Cruz. So is Sammy Sosa. In Nona's case, it would be her grandfather, Slim Galliard. A black man, yes. But an African-American man? Not even an American man. Try again.

As far as the islands... just like slaves from Africa were sent to United states, some were sent to the islands to help work on the sugar plantations.... so some Carribeans can also trace their roots to Africa.

Thanks for the history lesson, but doesn't that make them Afro-Caribbean?

Oh, and I interchange the term black with African American.

I...see.

And since Marvin Gaye presumably traces his roots to Africa...

Ah, so we're presuming now! Good call. We all see how well that would've worked had you presumed that Jan does as well. And to be honest, don't we ALL trace our roots to Africa - yes, even my pasty Pilgrim ass?

Marvin was indeed Nona's dad... and she is American... uhhhh, that makes her AFrican American.

Uhhhh...no, it does not. You can't just chunk out her mother's entire lineage just because you'd like to be right.

Like I said before... I didn't make these rules; white people did.

Of course, you made that quip to "pull" her down to "common" status, so to speak.
[Edited 8/2/05 21:53pm]

I'm sorry you feel that being considered African-American is a "pull-down" and "common."

Does that mean that the opposite is a "step-up" and "extraordinary?"

lol

Stop acting like it's an insult. Seriously, it's not.

I am sure that you realize that 100% African ancestry is not required to be classified as "African-American, because if it were, there would be very few African-Americans in this country. Hell, my grandmother is "African-American," and she's a octoroon who grew up in Louisiana speaking another language. She hasn't complained about or taken offense to it yet. lol

So is it accurate to call Nona a "Black American?" Or do I get a "Negative" there as well. lol

Depends on who you ask. Personally, I don't like white people, so I'm not the one to ask.

I will when you will.

There are plenty - millions, in fact. They are the ones who were born in Africa, or have parents or grandparents of origin IN AN AFRICAN COUNTRY. They can walk to a MAP of Africa, point to a COUNTRY, and say "that's where my family is from". I know it's PC to refers to black Americans as "African-American", but to hell with that - it's just stupid. I only know a handful of authentic African-Americans. I have a buddy (black) who can trace her mother's mother's roots to 1734...in Maryland. Maryland ain't hardly Africa. She's American as apple pie, baseball and the amber goddamned waves of grain.

Hell, my grandmother is "African-American," and she's a octoroon who grew up in Louisiana speaking another language. She hasn't complained about or taken offense to it yet. lol

Your grandmother is black. If you want to call her African-American, that's fine. While you're at it, feel free to call me African-American. Doesn't make it true, but knock yourself out. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm German, but...I always found it peculiar that some blacks want to reach all the way to another continent and another CENTURY just to belong to a group of people. Yes, I think it's ridiculous. Yes, you're free to call me Hitler. No, I won't be able to stay awake when you do.

So is it accurate to call Nona a "Black American?" Or do I get a "Negative" there as well. lol [/quote]

Mmmdunno. We still haven't established if she's considered black or Hispanic, though I don't think anyone would argue if you called her black - including Nona herself.

You are very funny (and I mean that in a good way).

1) Nobody said you were a Nazi or a racist. lol (Or did I miss something)
2) Why do you consider my grandmother black? One drop rule maybe? I would have thought you would have said she wasn't black (being as how she only has one black great-grandparent). Interesting.
3) Blackness (and the physical traits defining same) comes from Africa. An African-American may not be able to point to one country on the African continent and say they are from there, but they can point to the entire continent and say that their progenitors came from somewhere on that continent. How many white people in America say they are Scottish or French or Italian or whatever-even thought their families immigrated many, many generations ago? Many, and nobody gets upset over that. And the only reason they can point to a specific place and we can't, are the circumstances of our "immigration" versus theirs. I wonder why the African continent gets villified so much? If I came on here and said Nona was Cuban-American or whatever, I bet I wouldn't hear a peep.
4) Would you be surprised if Nona said she was an African American? I wouldn't. Maybe you are protesting more than her. Ever thought of that?

And finally..
5) I'm done with this as the convo is more appropriate for another forum and another topic. Pleasure speaking with you. biggrin

Interesting how you failed to mention that yourself. Try again.

Right. Like Egypt. Or South Africa. Or all those other places where white Africans can point to as well.

And the only reason they can point to a specific place and we can't, are the circumstances of our "immigration" versus theirs.

Tell that to my African and Caribbean friends.

I wonder why the African continent gets villified so much? If I came on here and said Nona was Cuban-American or whatever, I bet I wouldn't hear a peep.

Yes, you would. You would hear a bunch of people painting her as a sellout for daring to say something that is actually true.

4) Would you be surprised if Nona said she was an African American?

Of course I wouldn't. She's free to define herself as however she sees fit.

Maybe you are protesting more than her. Ever thought of that?

Hello, pot. My name is kettle. Is that midnight black you're wearing, or coal black?

And finally..
5) I'm done with this as the convo is more appropriate for another forum and another topic.

Thank GOD. It's futile to discuss things with people who would rather be right than correct. Besides, I've posed this question elsewhere, and I'm pretty sure that I'll actually get an intelligence response whenever I get a response.

Pleasure was mine - that's for damn sure. Lots of laugha all around.

I said she was an octoroon. If you didn't know what that meant, you should have looked it up. lol

And as far as the rest of your responses....1) you should really read more closely, 2) you arguments make no sense in response to my queries, and 3) being African-American does not preclude you from being something else as well- you seem to be overlooking that premise..
And yes, it IS difficult to argue with someone who wants to be right rather than correct. That's why I'm REALLY stopping now. lol

I remember when Spike Lee wrote that letter to Prince about how he should have more than just white and latina women in his videos. I was offended by that and I think Prince should have been offended by that as well. So Prince wants white and Latina women in his videos. That is HIS choice. For whatever reason that is what he wanted and I think we should just accept it. I always felt like Violet the Organ Grinder video was a response to that Spike Lee thing. That was a time when I felt Prince compromised to satisfy someone. My point is it doesn't matter if the woman was black, white. latina or asian or Vanity, Cat, Diamond and Pearl, Mayte...they all looked hot with Prince and they were all of different colors.

Why were u offeneded? and why should prince have been? if anything prince as a blk man should understand where spike is comming from. a LARGE portion of princes fanbase is female. and many of them are blk. how do u think that makes us blk chicks feel to watch a prince vid and not see ourselves? look @ some popular prince vids: kiss, little red corvette, lets go crazy, mountains.....for example. do u see any blk chicks? nope. u see white, hispanic, or ambiguos chicks in it. i don't think its wrong for prince to have a preference. whatever floats his boat. but he should def. understand where spike was coming from

Not really. If you're equating black to African-American, that's simply incorrect. I have a white buddy who is African-American (born and raised in Zaire); likewise, my Caribbean friends would be furious if you called them African-American, because they are not. (For the record, I think Cuba is the largest Caribbean island. I'm not too sure if it's considered a part of the Caribbean, though. Anyone care to enlighten me?)

Of course, you made that quip to "pull" her down to "common" status, so to speak. I know it's common for some blacks to claim multiethnicity by saying that their greatgreatgreeeeeat grandmother was 1/4 Charokee, but the truth is that Nona is not African-American. Even if we assume that her father Marvin was AA, you can't just chunk 1/4 Irish and 1/4 Cuban out of the window just because you want to. I don't think that anyone is arguing that Nona isn't black, but to say she's African-American is a bit of a stretch.
