New topic PrintableBIG YAWN ON THE NIKKA ALBUM. Sad but with this many Prince peeps, this album sounds just like a Paisley Park Protege album; shall we say... "Dale - Riot in English", "The 3 O'Clock", or even "Good Question". Nice riffs by Wendy, Lenny and whomever else but this album is tired. The few good songs sound like good songs that could have been on Wendy and Lisa's second or third album. But it just ain't hittin as todays Funk/R&B.
And whoever that was who thought Prince was singing on "I don't Think We've Met" you must be mad, that ain't Prince. And lastly; if that's the single why isn't it on the album? [Edited 6/2/05 22:36pm] My name is Prince and I want your money

Lenny rocks as a drummer, though. I don't know who said that Lenny's a poser, but perhaps that person is a poser themselves, and see something in Lenny that reminds them of themselves. Wha-eva!
Oh, and BTW, get the facts straight - JOHN BLACKWELL ISN'T ON THE ALBUM AT ALL. Hello?!?! Like, did you bother to read the liner notes before you posted that, or were you just some Entertainment Weekly junkie who was reposting things to make for busy work? no...i thought i read it inthe liner notes but i could have been smashed drunk when i was reading it.... but hey, get your digs it at others expense..if it makes you feel better about yourself..a-otay!! This album was neutered
I am just being able to shake the fact that the promoted single before the release of the album is not on the release "I don't think we met", I kept listening to that song over and over and over. When I checked out the EPK it sounded as if this was going to be more of a funk/rock driven album, kind of like a solid experience. But the album was watered down from what I originally expected. I was really really excited about an all rock/funk album. That said, it's a fun album. I really really love the rock/funk oriented songs but some of the slower songs could have been left off. There is nothing as epic as push and pull on here and the slower songs don't have as much meaning as I think she intended them to. The album could have been fleshed out as it's only 45 minutes long. An album that short should pack a solid punch and there is no TKO goin on here. 1 - Till I get to You: This sounds like a knock off of the originally intended single "I don't think we met". It's still fun. 2 - Can'tNeverDidNuthin: Catchy catchy catchy. This girl was born to rock 3 - Fooled ya Baby: I actually really love this song. It's one of the slower jams but it's great. Funny how lyrics change everything about a song. When I was first listening to this, not knowing the words I only made out a little here and there but focused on the "Fooled ya Baby" part and thought she was being a major bitch gloating how she fooled someone into thinking she loved him and when I read the lyrics it's just the opposite. Quite a sad song actually. Never having expressed her true feelings and now the guy is in love with someone else I fooled ya baby, made you think I didn't care.....when I really did. 4 - I gotta know: Another slow jam. I got really really hooked on the little portion of this song from the EPK and there is more production going on than I thought there would be. But I do love how she sings this song. 5 - Around the World: Uptempo, on the funky side. I think this is one of those songs that were meant to kind of save your soul and this doesn't hit me like "So have I for You", "Tug of War" or "Push and Pull". Those songs were just so amazing in their saving quality. The more I listen to this the more I'm connecting with it, but I don't think this will have anywhere near the same kind of meaning as the 3 I mentioned. 6 - Swing It Around: I absofreakinlutely love this damn song!! At first listen I thought this was a throw away jam and I think it just needed a good buzz cuz after 3 beers this song was jammin. I can't get enough of this song. Funky as hell and oozing with raw Nikka. 7 - Funkier than a Mosquito's tweeter: This album could have done without this song. The only thing that saves this for me is the kick ass musicianship in the second half of the song. I fast forward through the first half but I wouldn't have included this as part of the main album, I would have made this as a hidden track if it absolutely needed to be on here. 8 - On & On: Nothing meaningful goin on her except serious rockin and knockin Make your mama proud like a real man should. Scream so loud It'll wake the neighborhood Gonna write a song bout the way you do it Baby don't fuck around put your back into it yeah.....ooowwww! 9 - Happy in the Morning: Pure sugar pop. Absolutely delicious 10 - Hey Love: I think this is another song she wanted you to connect with like some of the more meaningful songs on her first album. It's not doing it for me. Might be that I'm in a different space than I was when her first album dropped. The album could have done without this and more funk/rock 11 - Fatherless Child: This is a nice song but kind of out of place on this album. Another song I wouldn't have included. Not unless she was going for a more eclectic sound which would have required for the album to be more fleshed out. I prefer Everybody over this album. I like the eclectic nature of it and so many of those songs just did it for me. Like a feather, that song just never ever gets old and I loved how fresh it was when I first heard it. Unique and I loved that about it. Songs like Tug of War, So Have I for you and Push and Pull had so much meaning and are still favorites of mine. This album needed one of two things. It needed to either be a little more focused and cohesive or longer, fleshed out and more eclectic. Overall I think I'd give this about 3 1/2 stars or a B rating. For anyone who dug her last album, I do recommend this. There is enough on here to thoroughly enjoy. It's not the follow up it could have been but it's still good nonetheless. I agree with what other people have said about Nikka. She is one of the freshest talents out there. Her look and her vibe, singular and unique. Her looks are somewhat unconventional, not the ideal beauty but she eclipses so many women that people would consider as ideal. She oozes this rawness, honest and sexy. She kind of reminds me of Joan Osborne in the power of her voice and her capabilities. She can go many places with her gift and I do think she does have a killer album in her. I love what I've heard from her so far and hopefully it won't be four years until the next release. go here to listen to the original single that didn't make it to the album: http://envy13.com/archive...e_met.html Scroll down to the bottom and click the real player link. This song should have driven this album. Remove some of those slower tracks, include this and other probable outtakes and this would have been kickin Oh yeah, she also thanks Prince in the liner notes. Does anyone know if the song her wrote for her ended up on here? 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Thanks for providing the link to "I Don't Think We've Met". It's a fun song. That said, I prefer "Til I Get to U". I think it's much tighter, and a little more rockin'. I Don't Think We've Met is a little silly in comparison, imo.
I think she/the label made the right call in that case. I haven't heard the other outtakes though, and I'd certainly love to hear what else was scrapped. Great album as it is....

Now why am I not surprised you'd disagree with me Till I get to you is a neutered version of "I don't think we met". This song is rocking and funky as hell. Should have been on the album. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I think the 3 main reasons I prefer "Til I Get to You" over "I Don't Think We've Met" are:
1. a stronger more creative lyric 2. the heavy guitar combined with the screaming toward the end gave me goosebumps 3. parts of her vocal on "I Don't Think We've Met" sound a little silly- I admire that she goes the extra mile, but it just doesn't work here
