Nikka Costa is what I call absolutely "RAW in Serious Talent". It is rare to see people with such zeal and flavor. Her vocals were tremendous and powerful. Her moves were "automatic" and she is an outstanding instant "audience grabber". Therefore, I seriously feel that her life is going to be filling our WORLD with "FRESH and BOLD" things to come... and about now the: INDUSTRY seriously needs it!!! Respectfully submitted, RESPECTFUL Lenny and Nikka "what a powerhouse of talent" please include those who also congtributed on her cd...

I dig this album. As a whole it's MUCH better than her firs. confused for a sophomore effort. I can't wait for her Junior Year!...WOOHOO! The album doesn't seem to skip around as much...it's a bit more focused. Just like a real sopohmore in comparison to a freshman.
don't tell no one...but the First cut...the single...reminds me vaguely of a little ditty about Jack and Diane...buy Jon Cougar...or is it Mellencamp... [Edited 5/27/05 8:13am]

Does anyone have the liner note. Who plays what on what? I'm trying to guess...but one can never be certain.

You should've checked them out at the concert at the State Theater here in Mpls. They tore down the house. That Nikka has a serious Raw spirit.

Wait... I thought when this album was first announced Nikka Costa was talking about how excited she was cuz Prince wrote a song for it... some jazzy kind of number... Is that song not on this album any more? If so, was that song "Don't Think We've Met"? Why would she take off a Prince track for a couple of Lenny Kravitz wannabe fillers? She had the real thing!!!

I've got the first version of the album and there's a track called "The Last Time" that sounds very GirlBros-ish. In my opinion the first draft of this album was so much stronger than the released version. Not to mention that her last album's cover looked a lot like Eroica, even Wendy said that when she seen it

That performance on Leno was no different than watching Beyonce,Fergie or any other "bootylicious" R&B singer today.I don't understand what the fuss was about, she screamed through the whole song, when Jill Jones did that on her album, everybody attacked it.
That outfit and her "dance moves" made her look like she's more interested in being a sex symbol than being taken seriously as a musician. Is she gonna be on the cover of some men's magazine, next? Someone tell me is there any female artist today(other than maybe Amel Larrieux)who isn't all about being a sex object. Damn,no wonder Joni Mitchell got out of the music business. Other artist cameos aside, this is a great album in a world of average ones. It's not about the ballads, it is ALL ABOUT THE FUNK!
Image, live shows, hype and everything else takes a back seat to the fact that out of 11 songs 7 are funk. Imagine my suprise to hear the cover of "mosquitos tweeter". Kick ass song that Nikka does an average job on vocals but the band owns it. Do yourself a favor, run, don't walk, to the store (like I did after reading this thread) and buy this.

2. Lenny Kravitz plays on several of the songs. 3. The first song features Chance, Lenny AND Wendy Melvoin. Wasn't Silver Tongue suppose to be on the album? No, you're probably thinking of the Prince outtake "Hey Hannigan." Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Anxiety said: i've seen that the critics have not been kind to this album. entertainment weekly wasn't thrilled with it, and time out chicago turned its nose up at it as well. and i can kinda get what they're saying - it's kinda contrived, kinda trying to hard to be retro and neo-soul, it kinda has a knock-off lenny kravitz feel to it, it sounds like beer commercial music or something you'd play at a barbecue...yeah, i hear all that in the album. Ok, maybe you love Nikka's CD (like me) or maybe you don't...but there is NO WAY it deserves Entertainment Weekly's rating of a "D". Nikka has more soul in her big toe then bland Joss Stone, yet they gave her last CD a "C"! Puh-lese.

I picked up this album Friday and I am completely underwhelmed. I throughly enjoyed the Everybody's Got Their Something, but this one just does nothing for me. I have listened to it 4 times and I only like 2 or 3 tracks. I will continue to try but so far this has been a let down.

Hmm Lenny Kravitz a Poser.... ok...
Who is Chance Howard? Nikka Costa's first album was solid, from the ballads, to the funk, to the dance hit that was on that Mitsubishi Montero commercials "Everybody got There Something". I like her second album, altho it will have to grow on me. Awaiting the Prince Fanatic Know-It-All replies to my question of Who is Chance?

Ummm...I just got the new disc, and listened through it once. It's a different feel, and not better, but not worse than the other album. It's different. Lenny rocks as a drummer, though. I don't know who said that Lenny's a poser, but perhaps that person is a poser themselves, and see something in Lenny that reminds them of themselves. Wha-eva!
Oh, and BTW, get the facts straight - JOHN BLACKWELL ISN'T ON THE ALBUM AT ALL. Hello?!?! Like, did you bother to read the liner notes before you posted that, or were you just some Entertainment Weekly junkie who was reposting things to make for busy work?

I really enjoyed and I don't understand the haterade that Nikka is getting. I don't want to think that because she is a white woman with some soul and funk that the mainstream is taking a shot at her but, it looks like that is occuring.

Fo' real. This is a really nice, fun album. I think the media had decided at some point that they weren't going to give Nikka Costa a chance. It's too bad, 'cause this is good stuff! Some of that "Prince magic of old" can be found in Nikka's music....
