Well.... I love them both. Lots. And truly, it's Apples and oranges -- 2 different takes on a very similar role. Like several have already said, Vanity had a dark edgy side, while Apples was more of the girl next door playing dress up.

Like Dansa said, with Vanity, it's a package deal. I love Vanity 6 and I love the "Wild Animal" album. They both seemed to really BE Vanity. Whereas I love "Apollonia 6", but Apples is just a hired hand.

All that said... my pick is still Apollonia, only by a hair. And that I think is tied up in my nostalgia for the "Purple Rain" era, and in Apples being one of the first Latinas I ever found in popular culture. AND also in my disappointment in Denise Matthews so completely cutting herself off from her past. I respect her need to get out of the life she was leading, but I also believe that pyschologically, we hurt ourselves when we disconnect from our past. She wouldn't be the Reverend she is today had she not lived the life she did.

That's a hard choice, but I have to say Apollonia.
I like Vanity as well, and she did have raw sex appeal, but I still think Apollonia is prettier.
I don't know if I would have liked Vanity in Purple Rain. I think it would have completely changed the tone of the movie.
