Jesse Johnson Questions Were him and Prince friends, enemies, or just associates because it seems as if they did not like each other?
What kind of weird outfit is he wearing on the Shockadelica album?

What kind of weird outfit is he wearing on the Shockadelica album? ----- I alwyas got the feeling that Jesse did not like Prince. I think the Rolling Stone interview with Jesse in 1985 with the headling saying "Prince is an Asshole' may have led me to that belief. However, there is no denying that Jesse wanted very much to be like Prince. Talented as he is, he was a Prince wannabe back then. Now, his last album in 1996 changed that completely. You can tell he really did want to Bare His Naked Soul. That album was Jesse all the way... don't get me wrong, 'Can you Help Me', 'I want My girl', 'She I can't resist', 'i'm just wanting you'.... are all amazing tracks but, 'Bare My Nakedd Soul' was the real Jesse Johnson. Man did he ever blast... before he disaapeared again. I'd love to hear him play live.

The thing is,Jesse and Prince were cool until Prince decided to release a song called "Shockadelica".Since that is the title of Jesse's second album,he was understandably pissed.Suddenly,he began dissing Prince in interviews.I recall a Jesse Johnson interview from 1986 (Rock N' Soul magazine) where he said....
"Prince is in a creative rut.Have you heard the garbage he's been releasing? He's in a rut because he no longer has me,Morris,Jimmy and Terry to steal from. When we were with him,he heard our stuff and got ideas of his own.But now,he has no one to steal from. That's why you hear all this talk about him starting over with a new band" In a follow-up interview,Jesse admitted that he was pissed at Prince for releasing the song "Shocadelica"... "He's a bigger artist than I am.He will reach an audience that I haven't even reached yet.If he releases that song,it would look like I stole his thing, and I don't want people to think that" [Edited 3/28/05 1:21am]

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis used to talk about Prince back in those days also. One of the magazines, either "Right On" or "Rock and Soul" asked them about their producing Janet Jackson's "Control" and how many of The Time members were on it. They said the best thing about the whole project is that Prince had absolutely nothing to do with it. Andy is a four letter word.

All that may be but the bottom line is that you dont know where any of them are now and Prince is fucking legend and still kicking ass with the best of them.

Fambot, Jimmy & Terry are producers. They are not performing artists. You're not SUPPOSED to know where they are. They are behind artists, where hitmakers belong.

What kind of weird outfit is he wearing on the Shockadelica album? When I worked with Morris and Andre, they were telling me about some of the Prince and Jessie fued. P was always threatned by Jessie's guitar playing. P had a problem with the fact that Jessie could play the hell out of anything P recorded on The Time's albums. The solo's to 'Get It Up" , "The Stick", Jessie would take it to another level when these songs were played live. P had told Jessie that he wanted him to put on a lead on the track "777-9311". But instead, P recorded it, never letting Jessie record his. On the song, "Jungle Love" which is Jessie's cut, Jessie had recorded a lot more guitar on the song. After Jessie left the studio, P came in and ERASED some of what Jessie had recorded. When Jessie came back and realized what P had done, Morris said that Jessie "really wanted to jump on Prince". On the 1999 tour, P had his roadies fuck with Jessie's sound during his solos. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Thanks for the insights Blackguiatrist -I always wondered who did the 777 9311 solo and figured it to be Prince. I think at that stage he had a colder guitar sound than Jesse and that's what I hear in the song.
I love both those cats but right now I could for a bit of new Jesse.

Dang, Jesse's guitar solo on the album version of "Jungle Love" is almost 2 minutes long! How much longer was it???

Dang, Jesse's guitar solo on the album version of "Jungle Love" is almost 2 minutes long! How much longer was it??? I don't know! I know Jessie's solo is long, but Morris said Jessie really wanted to showcase his guitar playing on "Jungle Love" since P never really allowed Jessie to touch any of the other Time's songs. So, I know Jessie wanted to kinda get revenge on P because of that shit. And then to learn that P ERASED some of it! Jessie was really angry. I know Jessie is short too, about 5'6. But, Jessie, I think would have really hurt P if he had got loose. But, I know P was a rough dude too. That shit would have been "on"! SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Who knew Jesse was only 5'6? Of course, Jesse wore heeled shoes on stage which offset his height. That's probably what threw me off when I saw him in concert. [Edited 4/2/05 2:09am]

How ridiculous is the premise of causing someone bodily harm over a peice of tape? I love Jesse but he worked for Prince. The reason that anyone had even heard of him was due to Prince. If he wants to erase tape, he can do it. He's Prince. You're not. It was and is that simple.

That whole Minneapolis crew (with P as their leader) had some balls to dress the way they did, 'cause they're not exactly the biggest/tallest guys. I got s**t during my high school years from the cats on my block 'cause I had the gheri curl thing goin'. Also had a "pleather" Beat It jacket (black), though I only wore it out on "special" occasions...Just imagine if I broke out with some Prince gear...they probably would've stoned me My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

If you worked on something and your boss destroyed it, you would be pissed too. If Prince didn't like it, he should just told Jesse he didn't like it. Prince erased it out of sheer jealousy. Man, I wrote a thread over in Non Music awhile back about this very subject. When I was in Jr. High and High School, I wore the trench coat with the studs, rude boys buttons, the whole 9. It was a clique of us that wore that shit. Some of the cats dressed like The Time. Anyway, I have always worn my hair long, so yeah, I would switch from a curl, ala Jessie to Dez every 6 weeks. Now this was in So. Cal, so I never got any heat. The girls, mam, they ate that shit up. And I played axe too? It was on, player! On that note, if u have the 25th Purple Rain Edition on dvd, check out the premiere at Mann's Hollywood. If u see a cat with a white headband and ruffle shirt and trench standing behind the purple ropes with Mark Goodman, that's yours truly. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Not necessarily. If Jesse had never hooked up with Prince (or anyone out of Prince's camp never hooked up with Prince) there is a good chance he would have made it anyway since he and the rest of the Time are very talented. Who knows, he may have become a superstar if he took another route and was not in Prince's shadow. "Always blessings, never losses......"

Well now, Ms. Legs has to put in her . I know as a female fan of Prince, I would hear people talk shit about me b/c I dressed in Prince gear and would wear my naturally curly shaved to the side styled like P. But since, everybody knew that I was a hell of vocalist and good dancer they came to accept me afterawhile. [Edited 4/7/05 12:13pm]

that "shockadelica"-issue is quite funny: did prince title that b-side b4 jesse's album release? and if yes, was it cuz jesse had that collab with sly stone? i think prince never got any work with sly, right?
