Didn't the original lyrics for "Jerk Out" have lines referring to interracial dating also? Prince was in a wild place back then.

What is wild about that?

He seemed to be preoccupied back then about dating white women if he recorded not one, but two songs that spoke about it. The original "Jerk Out" lyrics were also a little angry about the whole topic.

For me, it's two fold. On one hand, I never had a problem with the lyric's, because every since third grade, I've had girlfriends that were of a different race. That said, on the other hand, as a black artist, I do feel it's important to NOT slight your own race. Dating or being seen with whatever race it may be, that's your right. BUT, just my thought, to "promote" a race or a shade isn't cool and it shows a lot about the performer's state of mind and character.

Believe me, it's nothing "wild" about dating out of your race. But, it was somewhat bold for P to write about that. Notice, in both songs, he's not the artist that's performing the song. Even though he's the writer, he figured let the group who's singing it catch the heat.

Perhaps 'wild' was the wrong word to use. As a black man with a Siouxsie avatar, I have no problems with interracial dating. It just seems a little strange to me that Prince would bring it up in more than one song. And it's always specifically about black men dating white women. Maybe it bothered him what the "mad sisters" thought about him?

I agree. I felt P was a little more than color struck and he wanted to drive the point home about brothers with white girls. Which I feel was very foolish on his part. I think he wanted to throw it in black girl's faces without considering that he would lose their following. Which he ended up doing to some degree anyway. Only then (around UTCM) period did he come back with Cat and Boni on his Signs period to counter the backlash. He wanted to appear like he was "down" with the sistas, so he could regain some of that black female audience.

nod I am glad that you brought that up. As a sista, I also noticed this issue with P and couldn't figure out why he was so damn conflicted in his music and why should it matter if people have a problem with him dating caucasion women exclusively. Like yourself,Sextonseven, I have no problems w/interracial dating since I dating men of different races anyway.

nod Exactly. Moreless, after he left Warner Brothers, they let him know where he stood as Black man in the biz.I think at that time Prince did do some soul search and has found the error of his ways. So far to date, he has written a song of that caliber in a while. In Retrospect, Prince's ego motivated him to write song as blatant as Ice Cream Castles.

I dug the lyrics on that cut, it was the music on it that I couldn't get into, it seemed dry for some reason.

ya know,I kinda agree. It's a cool song, but it's missing that "street" element that you usually hear on The Time's singles.I remember when this song came out,a friend of mine asked me if it was Prince. And,when you listen to it,it does sound more like something Prince himself would have done. It's also more pop-sounding than other Time singles.

Exactly. I think P really loved this song, but he didn't want to sing it, cuz of the lyrics. So, he gave it to The Time. Morris does not fit singing this song.

Most brothers at least the ones I know who date inter-racially don't want sisters to stop speaking to them but, they know that may happen if they start dating outside the race.

P was raised by black woman I am sure it bothered him that his black female fans were going to be mad if he stepped out in public with Susan.

I think this song might have been about her and I always thought that is way he kept their relationship on the down low as far as the public was concerned.

Like I always say, if you want to date outside your race and some members of your own race don't want to speak to you because of it....fuck them, that's their problem. You're doing what you want to do. Someone with a life of their own doesn't worry who someone else is dating. They are too busy trying to get laid their damn self.

Hell, I'm sure I've been the topic of many a "conservative family's" dinner conversation and don't give a damn.

Just my take on the song once I found out about Susan years later it kind of made sense that he would write a song about the situation.

It makes him a little bit of a coward he should have felt free to be out in public with her.

Lyrics aside, I found this album embarrassing with maybe 2 good cuts
on the whole thing

I bought "Ice Cream Castles"when it was first released because it was associated with Prince."Jungle Love" and "The Bird"were featured in "Purple Rain"so they were automatic hits. When I first saw "Ice Cream Castles"the video,my first thought was "where are Jimmy,Terry, and Monti?"The song itself really didn't move meand the album seemed to be missing something. After "What Time Is It?"Castles was a let down.

I agree. The 'Ice Cream Castles' album is sorta disappointing.I can't really explain why.Could it be the departure of Jam and Lewis? I just think that the songs on 'What Time Is It' are superior. There was a genuine "party feel" to that album. The Time never made another album that was as great as that one!

The ironic thing is, out of all the women Prince has been linked with, Susan is one of the darkest.
